April 30th National Honesty Day

I find it very interesting that a political figure created today, M. Hirsh Goldberg, once former Press Secretary of Maryland in the 1990’s. He created it, using April, because he thought it the perfect month since April starts with April Fools Day. So at the opposite end of the month, why not have a national honesty day. Coming from a group of people who are generally thought of being the worst liars in all of mankind it just seems a little hard to believe. Maybe, if our political leaders started being honest (Ever) we could take this day a little more seriously. It’s sort of like Chicken Little who claimed the sky was falling. The lies were said so much that when it actually was falling, no one believed them. But, if you are not currently in elected office, maybe we could be honest with each other. That said, you have to be careful of being honest because most people don’t really want to hear the truth, they just want to hear their version of the truth. Trying telling anyone that they look awful today and see just how well that goes!

How to celebrate – Figure out the truth for yourself, don’t let anyone tell you what is true. Run for office and learn how to lie. Accept honesty if only for today.

*Note – updated to correct that Mr. Goldberg was Press Secretary of Maryland not Governor as previously stated.

January 4th National Trivia Day

Most think trivia is trivial. They would be right, but one never knows when a bit of trivia might save our life. The more people know about something the less it is trivial, making the word trivia sort of a bit confusing. What is trivial to you may be important to me and vice-versa. It is often paying attention to details when thew details aren’t all that important.

So today is a day that you should let all those trivial details out in the open. For example, did you know that originally the Democratic Party were the conservatives and the Republicans were considered radical? Does it matter? Probably not but it is sort of an interesting bit or trivia.

History is filled with bits of trivia, in fact, that’s where most trivia comes from. History has always been written by the victor… but sometimes it’s affected by the losers. For example, a wounded Adolph Hitler was left alive by either an American soldier or a British soldier during World War 1 when he could have easily been killed.

So sometimes we need to study history to find out what really happened because, believe it or not, we human are animals and prone to repeat the same actions as our forefathers unless we learn better. So maybe trivia isn’t such a waste of time after all. Maybe trivia is where will will actually find out about the human race.

How to celebrate – Play a trivia game today. Read a trivia book. Learn something you did not know yesterday, today.

October 13th International Skeptics Day

Everyone is a skeptic, or at least the sane ones are. Often it drives us insane to try and be sane. Do you believe in UFO’s? Well a skeptic would generally say no, but if you have seen one you probably are not skeptic anymore. Do you believe Friday the 13th is an unlucky day? Well, International Skeptic Day is always the first Friday the 13th in the year. So if you are skeptical about it being unlucky, this is really your day!

A skeptic normally has to have something proven to them before they become a believer. In most cases, I think this is pretty good, to believe in something just because some one tells you you should believe in it means you will probably believe in anything, which I think is not so good.

Let’s all remember when people thought the world was flat. There were a few skeptics but most went along with that. Well in that case the skeptics were right cause it’s round. (Actually oval shaped but who’s counting?) Or those who said man would never fly? Well, maybe not man himself but the machines that man makes certainly do.

skepticism

Or did a dog ever actually eat your homework? May have but most teachers aren’t going to believe that because 9 out of 10 times it’s proven to be a lie. Chicken Little believed the sky was falling, it wasn’t… or is it? Stuff from the sky certainly does fall. So I guess in the end, it’s what you believe and what you don’t believe until it’s proven either way.

How to celebrate – List everything you are skeptical about and then see if you can prove them either way. Sometimes you have to believe the unbelievable. Move to Iowa.

April 30th National Honesty Day

Don’t you wish today could come more than once a year? Well probably not, most of us don’t always want to hear the truth, even if it’s best for us. So why should we expect to hear it from anyone else? Yes, it would be nice but there are probably lots of things we don’t really want to know the truth about.

The justice system is supposed to operate on the premise of truth. Well, this doesn’t always happen. We have to weave our way through all the lies to determine what is true! And when we find out, we so often are not all that better for it.

I mean, if the sky was falling would you really want to know about it? What would you do? Get under something? The chances are that if the sky was falling the last thing you would need to worry about would be that it was! That would simply mean, everything else has gone wrong!

And look at what happened to Abe! What did he get for being honest? Though I do believe that he and M. Hirsh Goldberg may have been the last two honest politicians on the face of the earth. So who is M. Hirsh Goldberg? Well he is the man who created the day back in the 1990’s. He was the press secretary to the Governor of Maryland back then. He believe there should be at least one day a year when everyone was honest.

But really, the question is with ourselves. Are we honest to ourselves? We cannot hide anything from God, or whomever you may believe in. So you might as well be honest there even if you aren’t with yourself. Can you handle the truth!?! Try it out today and see.

How to celebrate – Don’t tell a single lie today. Try and read who is lying to you and who is telling the truth. Go back to bed and don’t worry about it!

April 30th Honesty Day

Are you hurt more by a lie or by the truth?  Of course we will all say we’d rather have the truth, but would we?  We do pay  the price of lies at some point.  It could be the next day, maybe the next month or maybe even years down the line but we pay for them none the less.  We often even find ourselves trying to sell a lie to ourselves!

In the mid 1990’s M. Hirsh Goldberg created Honesty Day.  One day out of the entire year where we tell the truth no matter what that may lead to.  Probably, someone saying they will use this day to tell the truth is telling a lie from the get go.  Some lies we consider “white lies”, those little lies that aren’t going to hurt anyone and save so much hassle trying to explain what we meant by telling the truth.

When your mate asks you if they look good your answer generally will be yes because while they may look perfectly awful to you it is so much easier to say they look fine.  It saves fighting, recriminations and hurt feelings.  It was a lie but who really got hurt?

Politically our leaders lie to us all the time.  Probably because we could not handle the truth or because the truth would be too hard to explain.  Of course it was a video that got our people killed in Benghazi, oh wait no it wasn’t but it doesn’t really matter cause it’s done and over now and what really matters is what we do moving forward!  Ah, it does matter cause if you don’t know what you did wrong to start with are you not likely to repeat it?  But maybe you really do know what happened and you are lying to us again.  And the people that say they are tired of hearing about it are lying, what they really mean is they don’t really care what happened so long as it doesn’t affect them directly.  (Now before you get on your political high-horse the Republicans are just as bad, and that’s the truth.)

I had a friend tell me that the lie doesn’t matter, its the thought behind the lie.  I’m still trying to figure that one out.  I think what he meant was that if someone is lying to me to save me from the truth then it is a good thing.  We are constantly lied to.  By government, retail, well meaning friends, strangers, thieves, killers, con-artists (Though I guess technically they are thieves.), loved ones, people that hate us, people trying to buy something from us… it goes on and on and on.  I guess we really can say that there is a common thread to everyone we ever come in contact with.  Unfortunately, since that common thread is more often a lie than the truth, we really don’t know who, or what, they are trying to do to us.  Confused?  If you aren’t then that probably is a lie as well!  We are so use to being lied to that when we are told the truth, we more often than not, don’t believe it!

How to celebrate: Tell the truth for a day, if you dare.  Stop pretending whether you care if you are lied to or not.  Don’t believe someone just because they say something.  Do the research and find out if it is true or not before you place a blind belief in that person.
