May 7th Space Day

The first Friday in May is always Space Day. Why, well… that’s not really clear but let’s just accept it and go with it. The day was created by the Lockheed Martin Corporation in 1997 in order to try and get more students interested in space and the complex industry that goes along with it. Today, depending on which political party is in control, the space industry is more private than public, which actually makes things great for workers but not so much for the industry itself. Space may hold many answers for mankind as we progress, it’s too bad the progressives can’t see that.

How to celebrate – Find something about space to become interested in. Become an astronomer. Watch Star Wars.

May 4th Star Wars Day

So I keep telling this story and some people say it’s right, and some say it’s wrong but I am sticking with it. The day began as a mistake by a German News TV company, N24, in 2005. Via a translation mistake they took “May the force be with you” as “May the 4th be with you” and hence “Stars War Day” was created on May the 4th. Right or not it’s a good story and at least sort of makes sense. Or at least just as much sense as “May the force be with you” because isn’t the source already something with you whether you want it or not?

How to celebrate – Watch Star Wars. Visit Germany. Learn to become a translator.

We all know Star Wars; Han Solo, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Jedi warriors, etc., etc, etc. But did you know today became a holiday by mistake? The famous line, “May the fourth be with you” came from a post by the Conserbative Party when Margaret Thatcher won the Prime Minister seat. But now Star Wars fans all over have adopted it as a holiday!

How to celebrate – Watch any of the 200 or so Star Wars movies today. Dress up like your favorite character from the series. Visit a Star Wars museum.

George Lucas created Star Wars in 1977, “A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away.” Even George Lucas didn’t expect the success Star Wars would be when he created it. And I am sure he certainly did not think that he would share this day with Margret Thatcher when she was elected Prime Minister of England on May 4th, 1979.
