April 12th National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day

Remember those cold winter evenings when you came home from school or work and found you were having grilled cheese sandwiches and soup for dinner? Man, those were some of the best days ever. It was comfort food that made you feel warm and at home. So simple that it could melt away all the tensions of the day. Well, the grilled cheese sandwich has been around for a while. It sort of started back in the Roman era when cheese was often melted on bread and served to the rich and the poor alike. Of course, we didn’t have sliced bread until the 1920’s but that isn’t important. Any hunk of bread will do in a pinch! American cheese, Swiss cheese, Cheddar cheese… it didn’t really matter and dunking it in that hot soup seemed to make it even better! I miss those days. As our diets seem to involve less and less of the simple foods that made us feel better. It may have not been healthy, but boy was it good!

How to celebrate – Have a grilled cheese sandwich. Fix soup and a sandwich for dinner tonight. Have a grilled cheese sandwich party with all sorts of different cheese and bread.

National Bouillabaisse Day

Bouillabaisse is fish stew or soup. It can be made many different ways but it must include fish, otherwise, it’s not bouillabaisse. If you want to learn how to make a bouillabaisse dish, here’s a recipe.

Bouillabaisse comes to us from the Mediterranean Sea area where it is very popular as it should be since so much of the area’s economy comes from the sea and fish is plentiful. Generally accepted, Bouillabaisse should come from white fillets generally from cod, snapper, flounder, halibut, sea bass or monk fish.

It is generally believed to have been first made in Marseilles, France since it is a large city on the Mediterranean Sea. Of course the French are known for putting nearly anything in a bowl and eating it, however they are also known for making some of the finest sauces in the world and what is a stew or soup but a sauce!?!

Now I like fish, or at least some fish, but the idea of a fish soup or stew is not all that appealing to me. I suppose served with the right spices and including a fish that doesn’t smell too strong it is good. Since I have eaten a lot of food from Louisiana I have to assume I have had Bouillabaisse before. (See Louisiana was once French and they serve a lt of fish there.)

But then I have had fish eyes floating in a bowl of sauce before which I would not eat.

How to celebrate – Enjoy a fish stew of soup today. (I wonder if Clam Chowder is a bouillabaisse dish?) Travel to Marseilles and sample their cuisine. Go for a cruise on the Mediterranean where most likely you will be served bouillabaisse.

February 5th Super Bowl Sunday

Well who doesn’t know this is Super Bowl Sunday, #51!?! When you are an Atlanta Falcon fan or a New England Patriot fan or just a football fan there is something for everyone today. We can only hope it will be a good game, but there is nothing to guarantee that. Millions will tune in, some just to see the new commercials that always air during the game; some to see the halftime entertainment; others just to have the noise in the background; and for most, it’s just to have a reason to have a party and celebrate friends, family, and fun!

It seems like the New England Patriots have been in the Super Bowl every year since football began. There is a reason for this… they are good. You want to hate them, you want to say they are no good but you just can’t. From the players to the coaches there are few teams that can compete with them.

For the sake of those Atlanta fans, lets hope that one of the surprise teams of the year can stand up to the Patriots at least to make a game of it. Nothing against the Falcons but they do not have the history that the Patriots do. Still, they are a good team too so who knows, anything can happen!

Churches generally get involved with Souper Bowl Sundays, collecting soup for those in need across America. It is a really good way to give back to the community without spending a lot.

One of the more exciting Super Bowl games was in 1973 when the Miami Dolphins beat the Minnesota Vikings. The game itself wasn’t all that good but it was the crowning glory of the only team ever to go undefeated in a season.

How to celebrate – Whatever reason you choose, celebrate the Super Bowl. It may be for the game, the teams playing, the friendship while gathered to watch the game, the snacks and treats, the half time show, the commercials, the soup or just because traffic is lighter on the roads… enjoy. It’s Super Bowl Sunday!
