September 7th National Salami Day

What is salami? Well, it’s sausage with spices added to it to add a little kick, or a lot of kick, depending on the spices you add. It goes great with bread, cheese and a little wine. So if you like pork and like sausage, you’ll probably like salami. In fact there are those I know that don’t like sausage but love salami. Go figure? Many are able to make a full meal out of salami, cheese, crackers, and whatever drink you prefer. It also makes a great snack and is perfect for those holiday parties as it can be a proper finger food. Oh and it can be made out of beef as well, and chicken, or turkey. Oh how the world progresses!

How to celebrate – Have some salami. Learn to make your own salami. Have a salami party.

July 17th National Hot Dog Day

Who doesn’t like a hot dog? They always seem best at the ball park during a baseball or football game. They are warm and comfortable, as long as you don’t think about what might be in them. In fact, some 24 million are sold at ball parks annually. In addition to that, another 837 million packages of hot dogs are sold in stores a year. When you realize the average package contains 8 hot dogs that’s like… a lot of hot dogs! Today, being the third Wednesday of July is National Hot Dog Day. It always falls on the 3rd Wednesday of July, placed there by The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.

How to celebrate – Have a hot dog. Go to a ball game and get a hot dog. Study which hot dogs contain the least objectionable products put in them.

October 24th National Bologna Day

When I was a child I use to love bologna. I could eat it every day and seem to never get enough. I didn’t know it was normally made from sausage, I didn’t care… it tasted good, looked good and everybody around me always wanted my sandwiches.

Then, as I got older, I began to realize how most (Not all) bologna was made. I suddenly didn’t crave bologna anymore, the sandwiches weren’t as pretty  and as those around me that had wanted to trade their tuna sandwiches were no longer interested in my bologna sandwich anymore. It was a sad time in my life.

And then I discovered fried bologna! And all was right with the world again. Well, maybe not everything. The confusing universe of mustard to go with my fried bologna launched it’s ugly head and I discovered Spam. Oh, the perils of the new world around us that we have to deal with everyday!

On the lighter side, did you know most food days are considered National Days. No one knows why but if it makes us happy, who cares. Today it’s all a bunch of bologna anyway. No, seriously, bologna is good… just ask Oscar Mayer. You can always get Kosher.

But there are still somethings that are just wrong.

How to celebrate – Enjoy some bologna today. Visit Bologna! ASk Oscar Mayers over for dinner tonight!

July 18th National Hot Dog Day

Today is National Hot Dog Day. It always comes the third Wednesday of July which happens to be the 18th this year. America has a love affair going on with hot dogs. They are a fun food to eat and filling. That combination generally works really well together.

Almost a fast food, the hot dog has been around for a very long time. They started as sausage and have evolved over the years from being one of the most unhealthy foods you can eat to getting a whole lot better. I still remember finding things in my hot dogs that I did not want to know what they were. Today many are Kosher and a lot aren’t even made out of pork.

24 million hot dogs are sold at baseball games alone in America. Most don’t look all that good but people eat them anyway. One can’t hardly imagine going to a baseball game and not having a hot dog. (I love Baseball but it can be boring at times so having a hot dog to eat entertains you for a while).

And, of course, what would the backyard cook-out be without the hot dog! There are 837 million packages of hot dogs sold in grocery stores to Americans every year. Multiply that by normally 12 in a package, is… is… is a lot of hotdogs! Today was created by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council which I can’t imagine why!?!

How to celebrate- Have a cook-out and make some hot dogs. (The burnt ones are always the best) Go to a baseball game and have a hot dog. Get creative in a way to serve your hot dogs for supper tonight.

October 24th National Bologna Day

When I was a child I use to love Bologna sandwiches. Add a little cheese and mayo or mustard, or both, and my day was made! It didn’t matter if it was German bologna, Beef bologna or Kosher bologna, I just knew it was good!

And occasionally my mom would fry the bologna and I was in Heaven. I am not sure what made it even better when it was fried but it was. Every once in a while we got it for breakfast as a special treat.

And then, as I got older, I started to question what was in bologna.  It is made from sausage or mortadella, a cubed sausage. Black pepper, nutmeg, allspice, celery seed, coriander and myrtle berry is added for flavoring. It does come from Bologna, Italy originally.

I tend not to eat too many things that are ground up and mixed together before I get the chance to know what all is really in there. Like hotdogs which are perfectly safe but may contain parts I am not openly willing to eat. You are pretty safe if it is Kosher though so maybe I should give it a chance again. It really was good!

How to celebrate – Have a bologna sandwich for lunch today. Make up your own bologna recipe. (Use is sort of like Spam) Treat your kids to bologna, even if they don’t eat much of anything they will probably like bologna… just don’t tell them what’s in it.

National Pigs In A Blanket Day

Aren’t you glad someone, somewhere, invented pigs in a blanket!?! And why do we only serve them at parties!?! Why not all the time, there doesn’t need to be a special reason. Sausage or a hot dog wrapped up in dough and baked until golden brown. Yum.

Now I don’t know about you but to me, the picture above is just wrong. I don’t order fish with their heads still in tact so why would I want a pig in a blanket looking at me? And cute ones at that! And these look a little more like a mummy in a blanket anyway.

Of course in the world today you can use any sort of bread. Pretzel bread, potato bread, pumpernickel bread…

piabday-3

If you are really into meat, you could do pig in a pig! To me this seems like a little over kill but what the heck, if you like it, go ahead!

Pepperoni Rolls

Or you can get really, really fancy by thinly slicing that sausage or hot dog and wrapping it with cheese and then bread. How ever you choose to have it, enjoy it today, National Pigs In A Blanket Day.

How to celebrate – Fix some pigs in a blanket for lunch or dinner. Get fancy and add eggs to your pig in a blanket and make a breakfast meal! Come up with your own pigs in a blanekt recipe.
