August 31st National Eat Outside Day

Anybody can eat indoors. We do it all the time, morning, afternoon and night. Sometimes the weather keeps us from eating outside, it’s too hot or it’s too cold and those days are ahead of us. So if you want to go outside and eat, today is the day to do it. Food just seems to taste better when you are in nature. Maybe because most of our food comes from nature. Hearing the birds sing, feeling the warmth of the sun are appealing. Fighting off the bugs, rain and snow do put a damper on the day but it’s August so hopefully you won’t run into any of that. I think most of us call eating outside a picnic, although you can cook a meal and eat it in your front yard if you choose. Besides, ants really need your help.

How to celebrate – Have a picnic. Have breakfast in your backyard. Have a cook-out!

July 10th National Teddy Bear Picnic Day

July 10th Teddy Bear Picnic Day

Who’s your buddy? Naturally you probably will have several but who’s been there with you since day one (Or two if your parents were concerned) Naturally, it’s your Teddy Bear! We all know the story about Teddy Roosevelt’s hunting trip, He refused to shoot a baby bear and one thing led to another and the next thing we know, the Teddy Bear was created. So make some peanut butter and honey sandwiches, bears prefer honey over jelly, maybe some jelly beans or gummy bears (If you don’t think they will scare your teddy bear) and take you bear to the park. Just remember Teddy bears don’t like cook outs, they are filled with stuffing! Show them you still love them even after the 50 years you spent with them.

How to celebrate – Well, take your Teddy Bear on a picnic. Dig your Teddy Bear out of the attic. If you lost your Teddy Bear go buy another and start a new tradition.

August 31 National Eat Outside Day

I remember when I was young my mother always telling me to come inside and eat and then I could go back out and play. Today, most mothers have trouble getting their kids to go outside at all! So maybe this day will be a game changer.

A lot of restaurants now have outside seating, and not just because they lost their roof in a storm. It seems like since we all spend so much time inside, eating has become popular outside. Why not! If the weather is nice it is something we all can enjoy. And if it rains, well… you don’t have to ask the waiter for more water.

I have to admit, food does taste better outside. I have no idea why. In the old days everybody ate outside, half of the time even if you were inside back then you were still outside. I think the sights, sounds and scents of being outside just make it better.

And remember when you were a kid eating outside!?! It was more fun because you could make a mess and no one would yell at you. Even as an adult, it’s hard to eat watermelon inside and not be sloppy.  It also generally means a cookout is involved and I only know a few people who don’t like bar-b-que.

And today, with all the food trucks around, it makes it even better. Well, except for the noise from the generators and the smell of the gas from the trucks and generators. They have become the outside version of the food court in a mall… everyone can get whatever it is they want. (Though the food trucks are generally a good deal better tasting)

How to celebrate – Plan a meal outside today. Have a cook-out. Go to a food truck event.

November 17th Take A Hike Day

Sometimes, when some one tells you to take a hike its not such a good thing! In this case, however, it is… so go, Take A Hike!

With the weather cooler now, it isn’t like taking a walk in sweltering heat. The trees are turning colors and animals are a little more frisky so there is a lot to see. It is a great thing to do in a large group, although you will probably scare off the wild life. In the end, it is interesting to compare what people saw, sometimes its the same as everyone else but sometimes they see things no one else picked up on.

It can also be a great thing to do alone giving you a chance to get your head together and come to a better understanding of your life and where all the pieces fit together. Nature seems to be very soothing and helps you get your act together.

And it is great for inexpensive family outings. A time to bond, a chance to get to know each other a little better. And make them leave their phones at home! You’ll get resistance at first but after a half hour they’ll forget all about it. And make a picnic out of it making sure you provide everybody’s favorite foods.

And if you are daring enough, camp out over night. The view of the stars will be wonderful compared to being in the city.  You have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain and… its some healthy for you to do! That’s a win-win in anybodies book.

How to celebrate – Go Take A Hike! Most larger cities have hiking trails, find out where they are where you live. Find a friend or family member to walk with you, it makes it much more enjoyable.

August 31st National Eat Outside Day

When was the last time you went on a picnic? Well if you are planning on dining under the trees while it’s still warm you’d better jump on this as time is running out. It’s National Eat Outside Day.

Take in the sunshine, although it will probably be raining, enjoy the wildlife, until the ants show up and soak in the calm and quiet atmosphere, unless you live in a big city where you will hear cars, airplanes and probably construction going on. And if you don’t have time to pack an entire picnic basket you can eat something simple, like an apple!

Or if all else fails, there are always food trucks out there somewhere! Some of them are pretty good too! They come in a variety of foods available for you to choose from and while they are generally a little expensive, what the heck… you are outside eating in nature and being one with the universe.

Unless you are a cowboy or a marauding viking you probably normally eat inside most days. Looking at the same four walls, over and over again and talking about work and the people you work with. Why not do something different for a change. Walk out the door, find a tree and park yourself, enjoying the world around you. (Just make sure the tree isn’t filled with birds) Enjoy the sunshine while you can… and you can brush that little bit of dirt off your sandwich anyway.

How to celebrate – Pack a lunch and go outside today. Remember to clean up after yourself, your plastic bag is not a part of nature. Invite some friends to go with you, make it a party!

May 19th May Ray Day

Now that the winter has passed, the earth has started to turn green again and flowers are beginning to bloom. It’s time to get outside and enjoy the sun. There are all sorts of things you can do now that you couldn’t while there was snow on the ground. You could go fishing…
