August 16th Tell A Joke Day

With the way the world is today, all the disagreement, strife, worry, we can all use a break and one of the best ways to get that break is for someone to tell a joke. Of course, humor is subject to what one finds funny. Something that makes one person laugh is often not funny to another. That might even make the situation worse! So you must carefully craft your joke to include those you want to make laugh, capturing the largest crowd you can at one time. That sort of sounds like a lot of work! So why did the chicken cross the road? Maybe because it was looking for some new material.

How to celebrate – Tell a joke. Try writing your own jokes. Learn what makes the most people around you all laugh.

April 14th International Moment of Laughter Day

Here’s a fun day, International Moment of Laughter Day! The day was created by humorist Izzy Gesell. The general idea is to get everyone around you laughing while you laugh with them. Laughter is the best medicine and it is something life requires, or at least should. It is also infectious as when someone around you laughs you will find yourself laughing, or at least smiling, when you may not even know what it is you are laughing about. Being international it could, at least for a short while, bring peace to the earth. It might even be fun to try and get everyone all around the world to laugh at the exact same time.

How to celebrate – Find something to laugh about. Create something to laugh at. Make sure you are laughing with people, not at them.

April 14th International Moment of Laughter Day

We all know laughing is good for you. It lightens the mood and sends hormones through your body that actually make you feel better. That leads to the old adage that “Laughter is the best medicine”. Well, it’s not really it’s what laughter does for us mentally that makes us better, not actually a cure. Today was created by humorist Izzy Gesell, with all the best intentions. If you are laughing, it’s pretty hard to get mad at someone… even yourself. Most of us look for the humor in the every day routine. The more we are able to find the better the day goes for us, and everyone around us. And so many things are really very funny. It might be easier to find all the things that are wrong but finding them really doesn’t change anything. Laughing at something is almost like finding a cure, it lets us view things differently and project them differently to others.

How to celebrate – Find something to laugh about today. Get your friends and family all together and have a laughing moment. (If you can’t find anything funny) If you find someone laughing at you, try and join in.

April 14th International Moment of Laughter Day

One thing 99.9% of us like to do is laugh. Some of us live to laugh. Some of us can laugh at ourselves, which is really, really good for you. It is also very contagious. Try not laughing when someone around you is laughing even if you don’t know what they are laughing about!

Even animals laugh. Cats, dogs, monkeys, snails… well, maybe not snails (Although they could I suppose it’s just their faces are so hard to see). laughing is very good for you. Laughing releases endorphins, and does a lot of other technical things, that improve our quality of life. It has been known to make sick people better and at the very least, it doesn’t hurt anyone. (Unless you laugh so hard you bust a gut or are laughing at someone who is very angry).

Even the smartest among us know the value of laughter. They may be laughing at us instead of with us but if we laugh along at least we won’t be left out! I know I do a lot of things that should be laughed at every day! If no one else is around it’s up to me to get the ball rolling and start laughing.

People are prettier when they laugh as well, probably because they become a little more vulnerable then they were when they weren’t laughing.  We were meant to laugh, it takes less effort to laugh than to frown.

Even sometimes in sorrow there is laughter, or there should be. I remember going to a very somber funeral, nothing funny about that but it was outside and most of the women were wearing hats. Well, this lizard kept jumping from hat to hat without the people wearing the hat knowing it. Those who saw it happening just couldn’t keep from laughing, though I know we were thought less of because of it. The day was created by humorologist, Izzy Gesell.

How to celebrate – Pick your moment today to just burst into laughter. Always look for something funny going on around you. If you look for it you will be surprised what you find. Get others around you to laugh, you will be improving their quality of life!

April 14th International Moment of Laughter Day

Some how it figures that the day before the tax deadline would be, The International Moment of Laughter Day.  Izzy Gesell, a keynote speaker, created the day simply because he knew if he could keep his audience laughing he would keep their attention.  Laughter is contagious.  It is nearly impossible to sit in a room full of people laughing and not at least get a smile on your face.  Of course, yawning is contagious too but it’s hard to yawn and laugh at the same time.

Even babies are known to laugh as early as 15 weeks old.  Some have even been recorded laughing earlier but it is doubtful they understood what they were laughing at. In fact, half of us don’t know what we are laughing at when we laugh, it doesn’t matter because it makes us feel good.  Laughing produces endorphins, a known pain reliever, it opens up blood vessels to generate a better flow of blood and it reduces stress hormones while increasing the immune system.

We invite you to take a “moment” and laugh at a few of the following jokes.  Whether you like them or not, they will make you feel better for just trying.

It is so cold outside I saw a politician with his hands in his own pockets.

Me and my wife decided that we don’t want to have children anymore. So anybody who wants one can leave us their phone number and address and we will bring you one.

Two guys are out hunting in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn’t appear to be breathing, his eyes are glazed over. The other man pulls out his phone with trembling fingers and calls 911. He gasps, “My friend is dead! What can I do?”

The operator says “Please stay calm. I will help you. First of all, let’s make sure he’s dead.” There’s a silence, then a gun shot. The guy gets back on the phone and says “OK, now what?”

Doctor, how can I live longer than 100 years?

Do you smoke?
No.

Do you eat too much?
No.

Do you go to bed late?
No.

Do you have affairs with promiscuous women?
No.

Then why would you want to live more than 100 years?

I was sitting in a bar one day and two really large women came in, talking in an interesting accent.

So I said, “Cool accent, are you two ladies from Ireland?”

One of them snarled at me, “It’s Wales, dumbo!”

So I corrected myself, “Oh, right, so are you two whales from Ireland?”

That’s about as far as I remember.

March 31st National “She’s Funny That Way” Day

Back in Shakespeare’s day if you wanted to be a comedian you had to be a man, even if you dressed like a woman. Boy have things changed!  The first known female stand-up comedian was Moms Mabley, working in vaudeville starting in 1908.  Many have followed, Jane Curtain, Goldie Hawn, Gilda Radner, Phyllis Diller, Whoopie Goldberg, Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, the list goes on and on and on.

Some play roles like the grandmother that suddenly says something totally out of their character, like Betty White.  Some are a little more risqué, like Mae West.  Others use their cuteness to sell their comedy, like Kaley Cuoco.  Make no mistake though, they all have studied their craft and know their jobs well.

Comedy is not easy.  Timing is everything.  Give the joke away too soon and it’s no longer funny, drag it out too long and its dry and boring.  Some have made their acts so political the only ones who think they are funny are the ones who agree with their point of view.  Some use sex as shock value, people believing only those kinds of thoughts could come from a man.  Some use everyday life, finding the humor in it and passing that on to their audience.  Whichever tickles your funny bone is right for you.9b5

Laughter is good for you, it decreases stress, increases immune cells, increases infection-fighting antibodies, releases endorphins and helps relieve pain.  Even if it kills you… well, at least you died laughing!    So here’s to all the ladies that make us laugh, this is their day!  But really, it’s your day because the world is a much better place because of them.
