September 16th Wife Appreciation Day

Today we celebrate our wives for who they are and what they bring to our lives. It was designed to replace Mother’s Day for those marriages that do not have children. (Or at least little ones) To me a mother and a wife are, in a way, two different people and we men need to celebrate our wives for being a wife as well.

When we are young a wife is there to support us  and grow with us. They are the apple of our eye and we desperately want to be their hero. The thing is, they are more our heroine than we will ever be their hero. They do not marry us (Normally) because we are sexy, rich or will make all their dreams come true. (Of course there are exceptions)

By the time we reach our middle ages men realize they can no longer be that knight in shining armor but we still want to be. We certainly are as sexy and we often have forgotten what their dreams are. But they are still there making our dreams come true and they have shared or victories and defeats.

By the time we get older we begin to gripe about all that we could have done, or could have been and yet they are still beside us. Still routing us on even when we have no place left to go. Whether a woman has had an actual child to raise or not she has still remained a wife and raised a child… her husband.

So the old adage proves true, happy wife, happy life. Marriage is much more than having a child, in many ways a=it’s all about remaining a child and growing together… for better or for worse.

How to celebrate – Thank your wife for being your wife today. Fix dinner for your wife, or if you cook like me… take them out to dinner. Remember all the things your wife means to you, even when it sometimes seems impossible to do.

April 21st Husband Appreciation Day

Okay, so I know there may not always be a lot to appreciate when a man is involved but give him today, the one and only Husband Appreciation Day. Look past all his faults, things he does wrong and dates he forgets and appreciate him for who he is… an imperfect, flawed human being.

Let him have a day where he can watch his sports and not be interrupted by those annoying little things like, the roof is falling in, it’s your anniversary or the lawn needs to be mowed. They are trivial today.

Get him some beer to enjoy while he is watching his sports on television. Don;t make him get up and go get it for himself, he might miss something important like a really cool fight or an interception during a baseball game.

Feed him his favorite meal, even if you have to bar-b-que it yourself. Just think of the fun you can have watching him chow down, drink a beer, dressed in his underwear while watching sports on television!

And when the game is over and he’s eaten his fill and drank more than a months worth of beer, offer him the one thing he really wants. Yourself! Show just how much you appreciate him! And remember, tomorrow can always be pay back day!

How to celebrate – Appreciate your husband for all he does, or doesn’t, do the 364 other days of the year. Forgive him all his faults for one day.  Go on vacation so you can forget about today!

September 18th Wife Appreciation Day

Today is one day all husbands should be aware of. It is perhaps one of the most under appreciated days of the year for one of the most under appreciated people in the world, a wife. She deserves a lot of credit just for putting up with her husband but she generally takes care of the house, cooks the meals, tends to the children (if there are any), and is still expected to be sexy enough to drive her husband wild.

Keeping a house clean is a 40 hour job a week just by itself. There are the clothes to wash, the dishes to clean, the dust bunnies to catch… Then add to that the cooking, which is generally a complex job multiplied by the number of people that have to be served. In most families, every person likes something different and while it might be easier to make them all eat the same thing, most moms will fix what they know their loved ones will eat.

There is the laundry to do, sewing, taking children to where they need to go and most wives still work a 40 hour a week job. They are also supposed to look nice, have pretty hair-dos and finished fingernails and toenails. They are supposed to understand their husbands whims, his short comings, and allow him to still be a little boy at heart from time to time.

Oh, and they are expected to take care of the pets, make sure they are fed and receive the vet visits when required. And they are expects to do it all with a smile on their faces and not complain. In other words, they are expected to be super human!

Now all wives may not live up to all the expectations. They may have a failing here or there but then, husbands have no defense to offer. No one is perfect but even making the effort to be is well worth being rewarded. So if you are lucky enough to have a wife, appreciate her for who she is. Help out a little bit and try to make her life better, after all that’s what she is doing for her husband.

How to celebrate – Take your wife to her favorite restaurant. Bring her some flowers, or candy or something to let her know she is special. Spend the day doing what she wants to do (I know its Sunday and football season but there will be other games and other days. Hopefully this is your one and only wife.)
