December 3rd National Roof Over Your Head Day

You don’t realize just how important your roof is until you get a leak or even worse, don;t have one at all. Today is a day to celebrate your roof and celebrate you have a place that has a roof. There are many who do not.

There are a lot of things you can do with your roof, or on your roof. Adding solar panels can help you save energy and reduce the emissions into the atmosphere by drawing less energy from the grid.  They can even help you during power outages.

A roof keeps you dry, warm (or cool) and keep some falling items from hitting you as they tumble back to earth. They keep the sun out of your eyes and your possessions from rotting away long before they should.

But the main point in celebrating today is for those who don’t have a roof at all. They are subjected to the cold, heat and rain or snow. Imagine having no place to go when it storms or getting caught out in the cold with no way of protecting yourself. Just go out when it gets to be twenty degrees outside without a coat. Stay there for as long as you can stand it before you get yourself back under a roof.

I love animals. Anybody who reads any of my blogs knows that. But it is odd when we make sure our dogs, cats and other pets have a roof over their heads but not a fellow human-being. My dog and cats stay in the house and it makes me feel bad I do not do more to help protect a man or woman who does not live as well as my pets.

How to celebrate – Help provide shelter for those in need. Take care of the roof you have. Get a roof inspection.

October 28th Make A Difference Day

We are blessed everyday with the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life, or something that will serve someone’s purpose. It may just be sitting beside them as they go through a rough time, helping someone build a home, or helping little old ladies across the street… make sure they want to cross before you take them there first.

Older people often need help even with the little things. Maybe reading t them if their eyesight is bad or helping them shop for groceries. And sometimes it might just be sitting there with them so that they are not alone. Making a difference does not have to be something huge, the little things count as well.

The homeless are always in need of help.  It really doesn’t matter in the end how they got there, if not for the grace of God it could be you! A meal, a cup of coffee, a sweater or a pair of shoes will make their lives better and who knows, maybe they will rescue someone in real trouble because they had a pair of shoes to help them make a difference of their own.

Make a Difference Day is always the fourth Saturday in October. It began back in the 1990’s. And while people go out of their way to make a difference today, shouldn’t we all be doing that everyday?

How to celebrate – Think of all the people  that have made a difference in your life, both in big things and little things. Make yourself available to be of service to someone today. Don’t wait to be asked, just go ahead and do whatever it is that needs to be done. You will make a difference.

July 15th Give Something Away Day

Most of us have way too much stuff. Some of us have nothing at all. Linda Eaton Hall-Fulcher asks that those of us who have, give something away to those of us who do not. The idea, I think, is to put someone ahead of yourself. Giving clothes away to those in need, shoes to those who have none, even a warm meal to someone who is hungry seems like the least we could do. If we all did that we would not only help those people in need physically but mentally as well. Who knows, maybe it could change their lives for the better forever.

If everything you have is too valuable for you to give away, go buy something that you have no attachment to and give it away. It doesn’t have to be expensive but it may be worth a small fortune to those you are giving it to. And you don’t have to do it everyday, though that would be nice, it just needs to be today. Even something as simple as buying the person behind you in line at Starbucks a cup of coffee. Maybe they don’t need you to buy it for them but what a nice gesture to show someone you are thinking of them instead of just yourself.

And gifts can be something as simple as a handful of flowers if the intent is meant. Even by receiving the gift from someone else and showing your pleasure is giving a gift back that can’t be bought. Receive the gift in the way it is meant, giving just as much thought back to the giver as they gave to giving something to you.

giving-to-others

I am always amazed by those who have little to nothing themselves but always find some way to give to others. Even if those others happen to be an animal down on its luck. A little human kindness goes a long, long way.

And maybe that someone just needs a well timed hug.  That can be  huge gift of its own.

How to celebrate – Bring a co-worker a drink without being asked. Better yet, if you know what they like you will surprise them even more and show them they are more than just another person in the office. Drop some food or blankets off at a pet shelter, they need your help a lot more than you might think. Drop off some clothing you no longer want or use to the Goodwill or Salvation Army.
