March 9th National Crab Meat Day

I can honestly say I never thought I would be celebrating National Crab Meat day… or any meat day as far as that goes. However, unless you are allergic to it, if you are going to celebrate a meat day crab meat is a pretty good one.

They make great treats, supplement other fish meals and go well with just about anything. Apparently, most American’s agree as we eat 1.5 million tons of crab meat a year.

How to celebrate – Boil or steam some crab today. Make up your own crab dish. Leave your crabbiness on the plate.

February 20th Love Your Pet Day

I love animals.  They commit to us humans without expectation, though they do hope a lot! If you are going to have a pet, you need to love it or don’t bother. They have feelings too, they need love just like any other animal including humans.

There are certain things you should probably not share with your pet. Like taking your fish for a walk (Unless you bring the tank with you) and I definitely suggest not taking your cat swimming.

Cats are special creatures. That’s probably enough said right there! We have ten cats, yes, I said ten. Each of them has their own personality and have to be treated accordingly. They are very loving though (When they aren’t ripping you apart).

I have to admit though, I am a dog person. Dogs are, to me, very special. We have only one dog but I absolutely adore her. They are great company, a little easier to predict than a cat, and always want to spend time with you. You can talk to them, it seems like they understand you, and they never repeat what you say.

And given the chance, animals will get along with each other. My cats adore my dog too. And she has a great deal of fun with them, chasing them and being chased by them. We also have fish but ours are not real cuddly.

How to celebrate – If you have a pet, love it. Get your pet a special treat today to remind them you care. Try and guess what your pet is thinking.

National Bouillabaisse Day

Bouillabaisse is fish stew or soup. It can be made many different ways but it must include fish, otherwise, it’s not bouillabaisse. If you want to learn how to make a bouillabaisse dish, here’s a recipe.

Bouillabaisse comes to us from the Mediterranean Sea area where it is very popular as it should be since so much of the area’s economy comes from the sea and fish is plentiful. Generally accepted, Bouillabaisse should come from white fillets generally from cod, snapper, flounder, halibut, sea bass or monk fish.

It is generally believed to have been first made in Marseilles, France since it is a large city on the Mediterranean Sea. Of course the French are known for putting nearly anything in a bowl and eating it, however they are also known for making some of the finest sauces in the world and what is a stew or soup but a sauce!?!

Now I like fish, or at least some fish, but the idea of a fish soup or stew is not all that appealing to me. I suppose served with the right spices and including a fish that doesn’t smell too strong it is good. Since I have eaten a lot of food from Louisiana I have to assume I have had Bouillabaisse before. (See Louisiana was once French and they serve a lt of fish there.)

But then I have had fish eyes floating in a bowl of sauce before which I would not eat.

How to celebrate – Enjoy a fish stew of soup today. (I wonder if Clam Chowder is a bouillabaisse dish?) Travel to Marseilles and sample their cuisine. Go for a cruise on the Mediterranean where most likely you will be served bouillabaisse.

October 4th Taco Day

People love tacos, I love tacos! In fact, last year we ate over 4.5 billion tacos. Laid end-to-end that’s a trip to the moon (490,000 miles).

No one knows exactly where tacos came from, or the name anyway. One theory states that tacos came from Mexican miners who used to place gunpowder between pieces of paper to blow iron ore out of the rock. Apparently they thought about putting meat between tortillas and naming it after the bombs they made for the mines. The second theory is that it comes from Spain where they used small fish, live insects, ants, locust, and snails in the tortilla for a lively lunch in the 16th century.

The first known reference of a taco, to eat, came in the late 19th century called, “Miner’s Taco”. Looks like the miners won! (I’m sorta glad cause I wasn’t looking forward to the locust and snails)!

Tacos can be filled with just about anything though. Fish, chicken, beef, eggs, cheese, lettuce, bacon, you name it, and it could go into a taco. In fact, the actual taco part of a taco is probably the shell the other stuff goes in. Add spices and sauces of your choice and it is a taco!

Taco Bell is the first company to make the taco as popular as it is. Beginning in 1962 in California, Taco Bell has served more tacos than any other restaurant in the world! – though they do tend to stick to the more traditional styles – meat and chicken. Fish has become very popular over the last few years. Ensenada, Mexico is given credit for the fish taco.

The first taco trucks appeared in New York City in 1966, operated by two ladies that hoped there would be a demand for their product. There was! I have to wonder though if they served two of the more interesting types of tacos. Tacos de Cabeza, made from the brains, eyes, tongue, and lips of cattle. Or Tacos al Pastor, made like a shepherd’s pie placed in a taco shell. There are now even dessert tacos!

No matter what kind of taco you enjoy, this is your day to enjoy it even more!

How to celebrate – Invent your own type of taco (it has probably already been served somewhere though). Go to Taco Bell and savor the flavor!  Have tacos for dinner tonight!
