April 2nd Good Friday

It is hard for me to understand how this is “Good Friday” in the Christian world. It is the day that Jesus Christ was nailed to the cross at noon and left human form at 3 PM. The date does vary but the reason for this “Holiday” never does. Good Friday is also known as “Dark Friday”, perhaps a bit more fitting. It should be noted that if records are correct, the day Jesus was placed on the cross started out bright and dry but at 3 PM the sky darkened and became stormy.

How to celebrate – If you are Christian, spend the day in prayer. Celebrate Jesus Christ being raised from the dead on Easter Sunday. Let all celebrate their faith in freedom and choice.

August 22nd Be An Angel Day

We hold Angels high among us. They are God’s warriors, or helpers and we each have at least one that watches over us… or at least we hope we do. I have been told people cannot become Angels and Angels can never have been a person. I am not sure I believe that. Maybe it’s true from the literal sense but I have known many people in my life that I could consider being an Angel and I like to think that if I work hard enough at it, maybe I could become one as well. The day was created by Jay Howard Feldman in 1993. I wonder if he knew something the rest of us didn’t. Kindness is like being an Angel and it requires very little effort from us to do so. So earn your wings whether it’s in this life… or the next.

How to celebrate – Honor any Angel you know. Believe in something beyond yourself. Ask your Angel for some help.

April 19th Good Friday

Today is one of the most important days in Christianity, Good Friday. It is the day that Jesus was put on the cross, passing away at 3 PM. I have never actually understood what made this Good Friday, it seems like a pretty rotten one to me. However I guess what followed was pretty darn special. We could not have had Easter Sunday without Good Friday. It is also known as “Dark Friday”, maybe a little more fitting. The day turned dark at 3PM also. The day varies with the year sometimes coming early, sometimes later. It really doesn’t matter when it comes, it’s still a day to remember. That someone would suffer all so that we could have everything is amazing. Jesus did that for us ALL!

How to celebrate – Go to church. Read the Bible. Believe.

January 2nd Run Up The Flagpole And See If Anyone Salutes Day

You ready to surrender? That’s what a white flag means, or that you want to talk, or that you just finished your laundry. The general idea of today is to find out if any of your ideas have a chance of working.

If you think about it, flags are used to champion an idea and if someone salutes it, beside yourself, then it means they believe basically the same as you. In history a flag has always meant something. To carry the flag in battle was considered a place of honor. (Also the best chance of getting shot since flags are generally not camouflaged.)

Of course there will be those who chose not to follow the flag you have raised and that’s okay. There are a lot of reasons someone may not support your idea. Maybe it’s a bad idea, maybe it’s a dangerous idea or maybe they are still drunk from New Years Eve, after-all it was just two days ago.

Flags are important to people. They give us something to believe in even when we believe in nothing. We identify with flags symbolizing our country, our state, our community and our beliefs. So put your belief up on the flag pole and see if anyone salutes it. If they do, you know you are not alone, if thy don’t… then maybe you need to rethink what you are doing.

How to celebrate – Design your own flag. Let others know what you are thinking. Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb, you might be surprised who you find out there with you.

July 11th National Cheer Up The Lonely Day

Have you ever felt lonely? Of course you have, we all have. Maybe it lasts a day, a week or maybe even as long as a month… but can you imagine feeling lonely for years? Decades? A Century? There are those that do. There are those that feel lonely all the time, even in a crowded room.

Loneliness leads to depression because people need people. We all want someone to care whether we live or die, laugh or cry or even feel loved. After all, loneliness really is about feeling loved. That’s why you can feel alone in a crowded room, sure there are people there but would any of them miss you if you weren’t there?

We are all animals. There is nothing as sad as seeing a dog or cat sitting on the side of the road that looks like it’s lost it’s best friend. Well, it has, at least for the time being. But animals take on that Steven Stills attitude of “If You Can’t Be With The One You Love, Love The One Your With”. But people not so much so.

And just trying to fool someone doesn’t work. You have to really care, not just act like you care, and it’s not all that hard to do. Just showing someone that you care enough to take the time to show them some compassion. Just one person, you, can make a difference.

And then sometimes it’s just a matter of slapping someone in the face and telling them to cheer up! Just make darn sure that they aren’t bigger than you! (And I am not condoning violence.)

How to celebrate – Try and help someone you know may be lonely. Visit a retirement home. Rescue an animal that needs a home.
