Kids have been playing tag since time began. At first it was probably out of fear as playing tag with a dinosaur wouldn’t be much fun. The game requires no tools or devices to play, only the energy to run around seemingly aimlessly. It is a fun game unless you are really slow, that tends to always make you “it” and there is little chance of capturing someone else to end your turn. (I know, I was that kid!) Still, it is better than just standing still and doing nothing and it is great exercise! Maybe adults should play tag to get themselves back into shape! Since there is an American tag day I have to assume every country has it’s own day of tag. Except maybe those places where running from someone is believed to be a pretense to criminal activities.
How to celebrate – Play tag today. Make up your own version of tag by adding a few challenges. Play tag with your pets.
August 1st National Mountain Climbing Day
This is not a day designed to get you to climb Mt Everest.
It is designed to get you up and out of the house and walking along the many
natural, and man-made, paths that might include a mountain or two. Leave Mount
Everest to the experts, those people that want to drive spikes into rock slabs
and dangle from ropes. Pick the easier paths, still requiring effort but not
beyond the average everyday hiker. It was created to honor Bobby Madigan and Josh
Madigan for scaling the highest 46 peaks in the Adirondack Mountain’s in New
York. Watch out for the snow, if you come across any, I got the worst sunburn
of my life going up a foot trail of a mountain in Colorado. The sun reflects
off the snow and will burn you to a crisp!
How to celebrate – Go climb a mountain! Watch the Sound of
Music. Get out and enjoy nature.
Ah summer. It’s warm, or hot, outside and nearly everything you do causes you to sweat. If you keep your exercise regimen then you can plan on sweating a lot! Or… you can start swimming laps! It’s great exercise and you stay cool! And even better, since it’s a National Day you are being patriotic as well! There are really only two things you need to watch out for. The first is, make sure there is water in your pool! Diving in to swim laps when there is no water can be a bit hazardous. The second is, you really should always swim with partner, it’s safer and more fun.
How to celebrate – Swim a lap! Throw a pool party. enjoy the good weather.
This is a great idea! Let’s all ride to work on our bicycles. It is always the 3rd Friday in May and has been created by the League of American Bicyclists who came from the League of American Wheelmen, formed in 1880. Back then you could ride anything to work that had wheels. Of course, the horse was the most natural thing to ride and I do not believe most horses have wheels. Now I am all for saving the environment and getting the exercise required to be healthy… that said, I’m not too sure about this ride a bike to work day. If you wear a suit and carry a briefcase this could be a challenge. if you wear a dress to work and carry a purse, it could be an issue. If you work an hour away by car, this could be an issue. It’s a great idea but it takes some preplanning and some extra effort on your part. Try the night before as a test to make sure this is practical for you.
How to celebrate – Ride your bike to work. I would suggest not taking the highway. Form a bike ride to work group.
Today is a great day to take a hike. What’s the difference between a hike and a walk? Well I guess it depends on how fast, far and the terrain you hike on. You can hike around a block, but generally that is considered a walk. You can walk up a mountain, but generally that is called a hike.
I think generally speaking a hike is a little more adventuresome than a walk. It’s probably a little more strenuous and often involves exploring things you don’t normally see everyday. It’ a chance to commune with nature, animals and enjoy the weather.
Most hikes have a destination as well. They may involve a picnic lunch or even a sleep over at the destination you chosen. The objective of taking a hike is get out and spend sometime with nature, get a little exercise and enjoy life. Take you cell phone for an emergency but forget you have it unless you need it.
And don’t forget to take your dog. They love hikes, probably even more than their people do! And November is perfect for it. The leaves are changing colors, the air is a little crisper and besides, you need to make room for that Thanksgiving feast coming up.
But don’t ask a soldier to go on a little hike with you… you might get shot!
How to celebrate – Go on a hike. Form a hiking party. Join the army and go hiking every day.
Just like your dog, your pants really need the exercise so they should be taken for a walk. Whether you are in them or not is an entirely different question. It seems like in fashion today it really doesn’t matter all that much whether you wear them or not, particularly if they are down around your knees. (How can that be comfortable?)
Now frankly, it’s a little hard to take your pants for a walk if you are not in them. So it leads to more like Drag Your Pants Around Day. Let’s hope it’s not raining! But if you don’t like walking your pants then maybe it is a drag!
And what if you only have one pair of pants? Then what do you do? And why are they called a pair of pants when there is only one pant there? Life must be very confusing for pants. Keep that in mind when you look at them today hanging in your closet. See how lonely they look, particularly during the summer!
Make sure, however, that if you are walking your pants you only take them to appropriately marked areas. Believe it or not, a nudist colony is a perfect place to take your pants since otherwise they will have nothing to do all day but hang out.
Now don’t make today something about you. It’s all about your pants! There will be other days you can walk your dress or coat. And whatever you do, don’t get caught with your pants down! They would be really embarrassed.
How to celebrate – Take your pants for a walk. Wearing them is optional. Make sure to wash them when you get back home.
There are two things in life that we could do with more of. The first is gardening, we can always use more food or beautiful plants to make our day better. The second is exercise. Nothing better than exercise to get into shape, feel better, and look better. So naturally, the both of best worlds combine today in National Gardening Exercise Day.
It makes gardening not seem like work at all! Of course, gardening is not supposed to be work, it’s supposed to be fun, and working out is supposed to be fun, not work… so I guess combined they work out well.
Actually, getting out and digging holes, spreading fertilizer, weeding, and watering your flowers is good exercise. You use practically every muscle in your body in some way. Kneeling down, standing up, carrying the plants to where you want them, is all physical exercise as well as the mental exercise you go through putting the plants where they will get the most sunlight, but not too much.
And planting food you can eat is normally healthy for you meaning you will probably be eating healthy because of what you are growing! It is a win-win. I tried planting Twinkies once but they didn’t grow. On the other hand, once I dug them up they were absolutely no different than when I planted them! (except for a little dirt that you could easily brush away).
Gardening can be very therapeutic and a great way to get exercise that you don’t even notice you are getting. It is assumed that garden clubs across the United States created this day but no one seems to know for sure.
How to celebrate – get some plants today that you can plant in your yard. Go out and weed the garden you already have. Help plant a community garden.
