September 23rd Checkers Day/ Dogs in Politics Day

In 1952 Richard Nixon, then candidate for Vice President, was accused of taking a bribe… it was a dog given to his daughters. The dog’s name was Checkers and it was valued at a thousand dollars. (Some expensive dog for 1952!) Nixon, instead of fighting the accusations by the democrats, went to the public giving a speech about the dog and his children, on September 23rd, 1952. It is considered one of the best speeches ever given and Nixon kept the dog and won over the American people as well. Was it a bribe? Who knows, who cares? It was a dog and children, both who loved each other.

How to celebrate – Read about politics in 1952. Learn about Checkers the dog. Who is your “dog” in the race?

August 26th National Dog Day

Created by the National Dog Day Foundation whose motto is “Saving 10,000 Dogs – One Day at a Time.” Anybody who reads the blogs I do on a regular basis knows I love dogs. I truly believe they are man’s best friend. They are able to serve us in so many ways but I think the main purpose they serve is just to love us humans. Save a dog if you are able, you won’t regret it. They will be your friend forever. It may take a little effort, particularly if it’s a rescue dog because you don’t know what they have been through or how they have been treated. Give them a chance and they will reward you beyond what you can ever imagine.

How to celebrate – Rescue a dog. Give your dog a special treat today. Take your best friend for a special outing today. Take plenty of pictures.

August 5th Work Like A Dog Day

Today can mean a lot of different things to different types of dog owners. There are breeds that work hard for their owners, others not so much. However, the general idea concerns working hard until getting a job done. And most dogs will do that, they will work hard to accomplish what they want to get done and then normally take a good long nap afterwards! That’s okay by me because I both love dogs and naps!

How to celebrate – Watch your dog work and then copy it. If you are going to do a job, do it well. Let your tongue hang out and pant after you’ve finished doing what you have to get done.

June 26th Take Your Dog To Work Day

June 26th Take Your Dog To Work Day

Since 1999, people have been celebrating today by taking their best friend to work with them. It was created by Pet Sitters International probably because they need a day off! Your dog loves you and wants to be where ever you are. They will do whatever you want them to do, hopefully, as long as they get the chance to be with you. They don’t really ask for too much more. So take your dog to work today with you. I guarantee your day will be better.

How to celebrate – Buy your dog a suit or dress so they are properly clothed when you go into work. Train your dog to do things for you at work. Make sure you take a water bowl with you.

May 9th National Dog Moms Day

May 9th National Dog Moms Day

Today is always the 2nd Saturday of May and was created by Casey and Leigh Isaacson for their, “The Dog Person’s Dating App” or DIG. Reading about the day I was a bit confused as to whether the day is about a human mom and her dog, or about the dogs that become moms or maybe both. I guess it doesn’t really matter though I doubt true dog moms are going on many dating apps (But I could be wrong). If you are a dog lover, you need to find another dog lover to be understood.

How to celebrate – Love your dog. Try out the DIG (Make sure you aren’t already married first). Start a dog mom club, your choice if it’s a human with dog or just a dog mom.

May 1st Purebred Dog Day

May 1st Purebred Dog Day

Today we celebrate those dogs among us that come from only pure breeding. Dogs such as the Bulldog, the Rottweiler, the Beagle and the Golden Retriever are some of the most common purebred dogs on the market. The idea of pure breeding is to have a known look and personality to the dogs that we raise. Most of the time this works out well, though on occasion it backfires on the personality trait. Suzi Szeremy created today in 2013 to celebrate those dogs among us that are not mutts. Pure bred or not, love your dog and they will love you in return.

How to celebrate – Find out if your dog is a purebred or not. Go to a dog show. Learn about all the different types of breeds.

January 14th Dress Up Your Pet Day

Today was created by Colleen Paige. You go girl! The thing is, most of our pets would rather that you go right on by this day and act like it never was. Sure, it’s cute to dress you pet up to make them look funny or cute. The thing is, I don’t think they really like it. Oh sure, they enjoy the attention for a while and naturally they love spending time with you, but as far as getting dressed up, not so much. In fact, I bet they have a dart board set up with today’s date center that they target. So if you got up this morning and found the date ripped out of your newspaper or if you can’t find your pet where they normally would hang out, you know what day it is.

How to celebrate – Make your pet your mini me. Dress your pet and get your picture and get rid of the clothing, hats and such. Let your pet just be your pet.

December 2nd National Mutt Day

Dec. 2nd National Mutt Day

How about making this Christmas brighter for everyone! Get a dog, from a shelter, that could really use your love and probably give you back more than you can even contemplate receiving. It is estimated that thee are 3.3 million dogs in shelters in the United States. Most are animals that are filled with love and truly are man’s best friend. They, like most humans, do not deserve to live their lives in cages, seldom, if ever, getting much human contact. All they want is a home, and a little hope. They give back much more than they take and I can tell you, they are truly your best friend. They do not care about what you look like, how you smell or what you like to do… they just want to be with you and share your experiences, which really are all that much better for them being there. Today was created by Colleen Page in 2005, bless her.

How to celebrate – Free a dog today. Get a best new friend today. Give hope to those who have been forgotten.

Oct. 1st National Fire Pup Day

Oct. 1st National Fire Pup Day

Today we celebrate the Fire Pups that are not only our best friends, but in many cases our heroes. In the 1700’s the Dalmatian was used by the wealthy to protect their carriage while traveling. The dogs would run along side the carriage, protecting the contents when it was stopped. In the 1800’s the Dalmatian was used by fire departments as it was found they calmed the horses used to transport the fire equipment. Well we don’t use horses for fire engines anymore but the Dalmatian have stayed is use as a mascot for the fire department, (Along with other breeds) and they still help with search and rescue.

How to celebrate – See how many fire stations in your community still keep a dog. Read about the hero dogs that have saved man. Love your pup.

August 26th National Dog Day

I have never made a secret of the fact that I love dogs. To me, they are man’s best friend. To leave them alone in the world, or mistreat them just because you can is wrong. They have never done anything to you so what’s the point. Even after abuse, many dogs still try to make up with their owners because they don’t understand what they did wrong. They are loving animals, true friends and make us better people. We rescued a dog that I absolutely adore. She is great! Why anyone in their right mind would have given up on her is beyond me, she never gave up on them. Today was created by the National Dog Day Foundation who strive to save 10,000 dogs a year, one day at a time.

How to celebrate – Love your dog. Rescue a dog. Be a friend to your best friend.
