October 22nd National Nut Day

Well you can take today in one of two ways. Either the kind of nuts you can eat (Unless of course you are allergic to them) or the kind you try to avoid on the streets. (Unless of course you are one of them) It seems odd to me that the larger the population grows the more nuts we seem to have, both the food and the people. And the more people, the more people that are allergic to them, both the food and the people. So today you can honor the nut, which ever you choose or even both! Perhaps you could through a party for all those people you think are nuts, naturally serving nuts at the party! Because, sometimes you feel like a nut and sometimes the nuts fool you, particularly the peas.

How to celebrate – List as many nuts as you can, both food and human. Discuss what a nut truly is and what is pretending to be one. Discover which nuts are actually seeds.

October 6th Mad Hatter Day

Besides Alice, the Mad Hatter is probably the best known character in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I have to wonder what drug Lewis Carrol was on when he wrote this story. Maybe he was a little to close to his local hat maker, since most hats were made using mercury early on in history, and hat makers often went mad – hence the Mad Hatter. The 10/6 in his hat is probably the cost of the hat, 10 shillings and a sixpence. Today was created in 1986 by a computer group in Boulder, Colorado, who were probably bored, and maybe even driven a little mad themselves! Okay, maybe a lot. The intent of the day is being silly for the day, which can be fun for everyone, so long as it does not get carried away.

How to celebrate – Be silly! Wear the Mad Hatter’s hat. Read Alice in Wonderland.

December 12th National Ding-A-Ling Day

Today is National Ding-A-Ling Day, it is your chance to actually “ring your bell”. Now, it might not be exactly what you think it is… and get your mind out of the gutter! So we need to investigate what actually is being celebrated today.

Many think that today we celebrate Chuck Berry’s hit, “My Ding-A-Ling”. Now, we suspect that we know what his ding-a-ling was. It is suggested that perhaps it was what you think it was but if he knew what today was, then he didn’t write about what we think he wrote about. (Again, get your mind out of the gutter!)

TEC--Goodbye Landline Phones

And others may think that it is what truly was a ding-a-ling, the old time telephone! It did ding-a-ling for sure! We actually looked forward to that ding-a-ling! Then when spammers got hold of that ding-a-ling we no longer enjoyed it as much. But that still isn’t the true ding-a-ling.

And you may call your pets ding-a-lings when they run around half crazed for apparently no reason at all. We are starting to get a little closer here as we zone in on what a true ding-a-ling is.

The actual meaning of a ding-a-ling is going crazy! “If we weren’t all crazy we’d all go insane”! So today is a day to go… ding-a-ling! A little crazy! The key here, go ahead and go crazy… just remember to come back to center by the end of the day!

How to celebrate – Go a little crazy! Listen to Chuck Berry. Buy an old time telephone and try to find a place to plug it in. (That will drive you crazy)

December 12th National Ding-A-Ling Day

Obviously we are coming into that time of year when very important holidays are popping daily. Today is National Ding-A-Ling Day, one of the more serious holidays we celebrate every year.

Yet again, I am at a loss for words to explain today. He deeply rooted in our society and needs to be discuss in our current environment. Many define today in different ways, as it should be. A Ding-A-Ling can mean so many things to each of us.

Some of us take the day personally, Chuck Berry gave us My Ding-A-Ling but while it was fun Ding-A-Ling Day is something for all of us, not just the singular soul. We all should share in our Ding-A-Ling experiences, even take pictures where possible and share stories around a roaring fire, preferably with marshmallows on a stick.

National Ding-a-Ling Day is all about going crazy! It is the one day a year we reserve for even the most conservative of us to “go crazy”! It’s the day where we wear something odd, speaking in strange voices and do things we normally wouldn’t do. Now it shouldn’t be dangerous to anyone or cause any permanent harm but it’s the day we should let our inner self out to play.

crazy

So expect the unexpected today, or become a part of the unexpected yourself. It is the day where you are allowed to be a Ding-A-Ling and so are your pets, even if they look like road kill.

How to celebrate – Allow your Ding-A-Ling to come out! (Careful since we all define that term a little differently) Wear two different shoes to work or school today. Create a Ding-A-Ling hair-do!

May 25th National Tap Dance Day

Tap dance has been around since the early 1800’s. It’s roots come from a mix of African and Irish dance and music. It’s rhythms are limited only to the imaginations of those great dancers over the years. The date for this celebration was picked to commemorate one of the first greats, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, birthday May 25th, 1878.

The holiday was created by Carol Vaughn, Nicola Daval, and Linda Christensen who put the idea to Congress on February 7, 1989. President George H.W. Bush signed it into law on November 8, 1989, and the date of May 25th was selected in honor of Robinson.

Here are a few more, of the hundreds, of tap dancers that you may remember.
