August 8th International Cat Day

There are some 500 million cats in the world, most of which hang out at my front door. August 8th was chosen for International Cat Day by IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) in 2002.

Among the favorite breeds are Persian, Burmese, Shorthair, Siamese, Maine Coon, Balinese, Ragamuffin, Munchkin and Bengal.

Enjoy your cat and treat it like the King or Queen of any jungle it happens to be living in.

How to celebrate: Share pictures of your cat on the internet. Get your cat a special treat just for them for the day. Give your cat some catnip and let them have a mellow day. Adopt a cat if you do not have one.

July 29th International Tiger Day

Animals need our help, or rather, they just need us to let them live in their natural environment without interference. In the case of tigers, there are probably only 3,000 left in the wild and maybe even less by now. The day was created by the International Tiger Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2010. As we destroy their natural habitat to build a new mall or cut down trees so someone can sit on a new chair, we destroy a home for some other animal. It’s not that we can’t have those things we want either, just do it responsibly.

How to celebrate – Go on a safari before they are no longer available. Contribute to the International Tiger Fund. Learn where the products you use come from.

July 10th National Kitten Day

July 10th National Kitten Day

Today was created by Colleen Paige, a pet lifestyle expert, author and animal advocate. We celebrate kittens today, those cute, cuddly little cats that often can fit into the palm of your hand. The general idea is to try and keep kittens out of shelters and put them into the homes of cat lovers. Kittens are normally rescued pretty quickly, although thousands are born every year with no place to call home. Gestation for cats is anywhere from 64-67 days with anywhere from 1 to 10 being born in a litter. That means a cat can have kittens 3 to 4 times a year producing anywhere from 4 to 40 kittens during that same time.

How to celebrate – Adopt a kitten. Get you cats spayed or neutered to cut down the population. Give a cat a home.

June 4th Hug Your Cat Day

The main requirement for today is that you personally have a cat (I do not suggest trying to hug a neighbor’s cat, that probably won’t end well). It may not end well with your own cat either but at least they know you and the things you do. Most cats look to you for affection, they crave it just like a dog or a human being. They just require it on their terms. You might want to wait until they come to you rather than you go chasing after them. Oh, and if your cat is bigger than you are you might want to proceed with extreme caution. June is also Adopt a Cat month.

How to celebrate – Hug your cat. Adopt a cat if you don’t have one. Learn how your cat shows affection and accept it for what it is.

January 14th Dress Up Your Pet Day

Today was created by Colleen Paige. You go girl! The thing is, most of our pets would rather that you go right on by this day and act like it never was. Sure, it’s cute to dress you pet up to make them look funny or cute. The thing is, I don’t think they really like it. Oh sure, they enjoy the attention for a while and naturally they love spending time with you, but as far as getting dressed up, not so much. In fact, I bet they have a dart board set up with today’s date center that they target. So if you got up this morning and found the date ripped out of your newspaper or if you can’t find your pet where they normally would hang out, you know what day it is.

How to celebrate – Make your pet your mini me. Dress your pet and get your picture and get rid of the clothing, hats and such. Let your pet just be your pet.

September 8th National Pet Memorial Day

They are the same as having a son or daughter, a sister or a brother, or even grand kids. Our pets are sadly here for a shorter time than any of us would like. However, they stay with us all through our lives as we never really forget them. Today, I guess, is a day to be sad again because we force ourselves to remember them. It can also be a good day as we remember the good things they brought to our lives. Today was created by the International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Cremoratories. That may be a little morbid, but the intent is good. Love your pets, they aren’t around for all that long and the one single thing they do really well is… love you.

How to celebrate – Remember your pets that have passed. Love the pets you do have even more. Keep the happy times and lose the sad times.

June 21st Take Your Dog To Work Day

This could get a little messy, but who cares… take your best friend to work today. Bring a little snack and a bowl for water and your set! You can take them for a walk at lunch and any other breaks you get during the day. Who knows, nay be your dog will inspire you to some great revelation that will earn you a promotion or raise. To me, it is better than Take Your Cat To Work Day because you’ll end up spending your entire day trying to find them. But a dog generally stays by your side and sleeps. A really bad idea would be combining the two days, no one would get anything done. And if you happen to be a skyscraper window cleaner, maybe not taking any animal to work with you is a good idea. Today was created in 1999 by Pet Sitters International, ironically a business where take your dog to work day is your work.

How to celebrate – Take your dog to work! Make sure it’s okay to take your dog to work. Work at home today so you can have your pet with you and not upset anybody.
