June 12th National Automotive Service Professionals Day

June 12th National Automotive Service Professionals Day

Everybody wants to be a lawyer or a doctor, a professional athlete or president, a rock star or a scientist but if no one was an automotive service professional then we would probably all be stuck at home… all the doctors or lawyers, athletes, presidents, rock stars, or scientists couldn’t get to work. We often underrate those that provide those things we require to just function in normal society. Today has been celebrated since 2001 and should probably have been celebrated long before that.

How to celebrate – Thank your automotive service person for what they do. Imagine a day without your car. Try fixing your own car when it breaks down, good luck with that!

May 12th Odometer Day

May 12th National Odometer Day

The first odometer was used on wagons in the 17th century. I am not sure why they needed an odometer on a wagon unless they were used like a taxicab meter. I guess they liked to know how far they had traveled as well. The first odometer on a car was designed by Arthur P. and Charles H. Warner of Beloit, Wisconsin in 1903. Today we read the odometer generally to see how many miles are on the car engine. We know the more miles, the quicker the engine will give out. Maybe that worked for wagons as well. It is a valuable tool for numerous reasons but thieves have learned how to alter the odometer and turn back the age of the vehicle, or wagon.

How to celebrate – Check your odometer. Learn how to get your gas mileage from the odometer. Buy an odometer for your wagon.

October 2nd Name Your Car Day

Come on, you know it! Your car is one of your best friends, or worst enemies. Either way, doesn’t it deserve some sort of name? Generally, we want to name our cars something really powerful and strong, sometimes it’s some weak or expensive.

We tend to give names to things we use a lot. We also give them a sex. Well, they don’t have a sex so whoever called a car, boat or motorcycle she it really makes me wonder. But, to make them a male either is just as bad. Do you talk to your car? Do you actually think your car can hear you? Remember the old tv show “My Mother The Car”? Is it possible we come back as a car? I somehow doubt that.

Now if your car sucks up gas like it’s going out of style maybe a name like Bertha is appropriate. Or if it is really big and drives like a boat. However, I do not think the name Bertha is going to inspire your car to be better.

Maybe a name like Torchd will inspire it to go really fast. Or maybe it will make it burn through a tank of gas like a fire. Either way, it seems more likely your car will respond more confident if you name it something macho.

Or maybe you can give it a loving name, like Bambi or Love Bug. Just be creative. Naming your car John or Sue, Bob or Mary is not going to make it feel different than every car it meets on the road.

How to celebrate – Name your car today. Figure out the personality your car maintains. Be nice to your car so it will be nice to you.

November 22nd Go For A Ride Day

If you like to go for rides, today is a great day to do it. The weather is cooler, the sky is normally clear and nature is in full living color.  Do cars run better in cooler weather? I don’t know but since you will have to keep your windows open to accommodate you dogs, you don’t need to worry about running the air conditioning!

Or go for the most open air ride you can get! No one said it had to a be car. I remember a business partner my dad had in years past who use to ride a mini-bike to work everyday. He often wore nothing but a towel and he had more hair on his back than on his head. I will never forget the image I have of him riding into the parking lot, wrapped in a towel and the long hair from his back blowing in the wind!

And if a motorcycle is too windy for you try a bike, it will give you the same results with less wind! (but more effort) You will see more but it will be difficult to take your dog (though not impossible). You probably won’t go as far but you will get more out of it.

A boat is even more fun unless the lake you are on is frozen. The wind in your hair (not your back hair please). If you are in a place like Florida or southern Texas you might even still be able to take a dip in the water (not suggested for Minnesota or Michigan this time of year unless you are into that sort of thing).

There are so many trails, roads and paths you can follow to make for a really enjoyable time out of the house. So get out and Go For A Ride today!

How to celebrate – Get in your car and go for a ride! Be sure to take your best friend with you, human or not. Consider horse back riding for an outing.

November 22nd Go For A Ride Day

Today is “Go For A Ride Day”, a day to sit back and enjoy just going nowhere. As a parent most of us have taken our young children for a ride to get them to calm down and hopefully go to sleep. Well, if it works for babies, why not adults.

Why not enjoy just driving up and down the streets in a car they might have driven in the 1930’s. Back before there were highways and freeways where the only point is going as fast as you can to get where you are going. It use to be that we traveled down country lanes watching the leaves turn colors and enjoying the crops growing on the side of the road. Now the only crops growing along most roads are illegal in most states except Colorado.download-2

Or if you are a little more daring how about a ride in an old biplane. Looking down at earth while sailing among the clouds. The open air cockpit letting the breeze blow on your face, along with the old and fumes from the engine.  But still, it’s your chance to soar like an eagle unless you are in Colorado and stopping along the highway and cultivating the crops growing there.

Or maybe you feel like being a King or Queen for the day and riding in a carriage! I find it very relaxing to ride in a carriage, at night, in one of the old southern towns. (The northern towns are probably pretty calming too though I have never ridden in a carriage in the north.) It is relaxing though just hearing the horse’s hooves clap on the road way… and the horns of the cars behind you that are mad because they can’t get around you.

And this time of year there really is nothing like going on a snow sleigh ride. Just don’t go in your bathing suit.

Seriously though, going for a ride with no place in particular to go is relaxing. You get a chance to think about things you haven’t thought about in years, enjoy someone’s company (Someone who has hopefully gone along with you on the ride) and see things you normally miss when you are in a hurry to get somewhere.

How to celebrate – Figure out your favorite mode of transportation and go for a ride. It may be a plane, a train or an automobile. Close you eyes and remember a trip you made in the past when you enjoyed going where you wanted to.Take your best friend on the ride with you, whether that’s a person, a dog or a memory.

October 2nd Name Your Car Day

If you had a car like the one above, what would you name it. I mean, I know it has a real name but this is your baby, yours to call what you want. Maybe… “Red”, no too obvious. How about “Baby”! No, very few women would call their car “Baby”.  Well, what would you name it if you owned it?

Or maybe your dream car is a family car! Oh come now, I seriously doubt that! But let’s pretend it is. Would you name it “Daddy”or “Mommy”? How about “Pal” since it takes you and the kids where ever you want to go.

Maybe your car is truly a “Lemon”. That’s okay, a lot of them are. Lemon is really good on fish and some chicken dishes. The Greek use a lot of lemon in their dishes so maybe your car reminds you of “Chicken Limone”.vintage-ruxton

And maybe your idea of a car is a classic. Perhaps “Maurice” or maybe “Eleanor”. I can see getting in a car and saying, “Take me home, Maurice!”

Meanwhile, back in the real world. What if you drove a car like this? “Sticky”, “Homer”…”Eye Sore”. If you drive this car, one thing’s for sure, you will get noticed (I am not sure that is a good thing).

Now if you drive this you’ll definitely get noticed (but in this case it’s good). It’s a dream car, so you gotta give it a dream name. “Hercules”…”Atlas!”…or “Wonder Woman”. Doesn’t really matter what you call it if you drive this car!

And then there’s “Mac”. Not the good Mac like in Mac and Cheese. Just, “Mac”. There are some advantages to driving a car like this. People will probably leave money for you. No one is going to tailgate you. You’ll never have a wife, or husband, unless it’s your second cousin.

Then there’s this beauty! Actually, it’s what I drive and I call it, “Home Away From Home”. It may not be fancy or fast, it may not be luxurious, but it’s mine, and I like it. I hope you like your car, give it a kid name. It may not be all you thought it might be, it may have it’s issues, but it’s yours. If you treat it right, it will treat you right.

How to celebrate – Be nice to your car, give it a good name. Treat it like you would a family member, maybe even a little better. Give it a name you’ll both be proud of.
