March 4th Hug A GI Day

A hug goes a long way, to your mate, your children, your friends, and these are all the same people that make up GI’s. If you think about it, who needs a hug more than a soldier? They more often than not have to do things none of the rest of us have to do, they have to reason with unreasonable people and work in situations the rest of us hope to never be in. So offering them something as simple as a hug can reassure them that they are still a part of the human race and a valued member of society. We even hug our dogs, cats and other pets… and they don’t understand why… but a GI will. and if you don’t know what a GI is, it’s General Issue meaning the equipment every soldier receives.

How to celebrate – Hug a GI! Let a soldier know you care. If you can’t be with them, find a way to send them a hug.

February 17th Random Acts of Kindness Day

What goes around, comes around. Today is a day that we should celebrate every day of our lives. It is simple enough to do. Just be kind, whether to people or animals isn’t as important and why not both! It will come back to you, sometime, some place.

It can be as simple as waving hello to someone, taking a homeless person a sandwich or taking your dog for a walk somewhere you don’t normally go. You never know what might happen or how it might affect someone. it might bring them out of depression, change a bad mood into a good one or just make them feel special if only for a moment. Sometimes that moment is a that is required.

Well today is set aside as that day you go out of your way to make someone else’s day a little better. You can go back to ignoring it tomorrow, but then… why?

How to celebrate – Give a random act of kindness to a stranger today. Do the same for someone you know. Wait for that special feeling you get when you have done something nice for someone else.

July 11th National Cheer Up The Lonely Day

Have you ever felt lonely? Of course you have, we all have. Maybe it lasts a day, a week or maybe even as long as a month… but can you imagine feeling lonely for years? Decades? A Century? There are those that do. There are those that feel lonely all the time, even in a crowded room.

Loneliness leads to depression because people need people. We all want someone to care whether we live or die, laugh or cry or even feel loved. After all, loneliness really is about feeling loved. That’s why you can feel alone in a crowded room, sure there are people there but would any of them miss you if you weren’t there?

We are all animals. There is nothing as sad as seeing a dog or cat sitting on the side of the road that looks like it’s lost it’s best friend. Well, it has, at least for the time being. But animals take on that Steven Stills attitude of “If You Can’t Be With The One You Love, Love The One Your With”. But people not so much so.

And just trying to fool someone doesn’t work. You have to really care, not just act like you care, and it’s not all that hard to do. Just showing someone that you care enough to take the time to show them some compassion. Just one person, you, can make a difference.

And then sometimes it’s just a matter of slapping someone in the face and telling them to cheer up! Just make darn sure that they aren’t bigger than you! (And I am not condoning violence.)

How to celebrate – Try and help someone you know may be lonely. Visit a retirement home. Rescue an animal that needs a home.

June 29th National Hug Holiday

Today is National Hug Holiday Day. It was created by Hugs For Health Foundation. All sorts or creatures need hugs, just make sure they want it before you give them one. And it may be a little odd to ask them but trust me, it will be better for everyone concerned if you ask first.

That G.I. coming home after a deployment will probably want one, probably it would be better coming from his family or his friends.. and I would not go running up to a soldier to give them a hug if they don’t know you.

I am glad bears don’t have the same restrictions we humans do. They will hug practically anything or anyone. Of course you might end up in many tiny pieces if you try to hug one. But isn’t it funny that even one of the most unpredictable animals in the world likes hugs too!

And then there’s your best friend. If they know you they will normally accept a hug even though they probably don’t really want it. It’s kinda hard for them to hug you back. I’m not sure they understand why you are giving them a hug but I don’t think they really care… they just enjoy being around you.

So try using this coupon. See if you give it to someone and they respond by giving you a hug. My guess is they won’t… but woudn’t the world be a better place if we could actually hug each other without being concerned about it.

How to celebrate – Look for someone who needs a hug. Hug your loved ones. Be safe and just hug your pillow, it will not reject you.

May 30th National Water A Flower Day

Yesterday we talked about compost, today we are talking about watering plants. Get a theme here!?! But the name of the day is a singular item so do you have a favorite flower? If you do, it is the day to show your favoritism and water just that flower.

images (3)

Of course it’s generally a little difficult to water just one flower, they generally come in bunches. Also, do flowers have feelings? Try just petting one of your dogs or giving treats to just one of your cats and then look at the faces of the others. Trust me, you won’t feel good about it.

images (2)

Naturally, you don’t really need to worry about  their feelings if your plant isn’t real. So go ahead and water it but it won’t do you any good, it could even cause you more troubles. That’s the good thing about fake plants, they need no water, no compost and don’t have feelings. Or do they? How do we know those items created by someone that we thought enough of to buy, steal or obtain in some manner don’t have feelings?

images (4)

Okay, so maybe that’s taking things a little too far. But still, wouldn’t just be better to go ahead and water all your flowers? Maybe even water your neighbors flowers. Take care though, if you are like me you will probably over water your plants and kill them that way!

So just hope it rains and you don’t have to worry about it. But do you secretly have a favorite flower that you keep quiet about. Take a picture of it, the rest of the flowers will think you are taking a picture of all of them so they won’t know the difference.

How to celebrate – Determine which of your flowers is you favorite. Plant some flowers if you don’t have any. Watering does not include urinating on it!

February 17th National Random Acts of Kindness Day

You know, this day comes up at least once a year. In some cases, it is celebrated several days during the year. I kinda think this day should be celebrated every day from now until the end of your life!

If everybody celebrated random acts of kindness maybe we would have no more wars, no more mass shootings, no more highway outrage. We would live together in harmony and peace.

We would share what we have, give before being asked for and understand rather than condemn. And no, it will never happen because that would require people to be near perfect and I have yet to find one near perfect person anywhere. Well, except for me.

So I guess that’s why we need to celebrate at least one day out of the year where we practice one day where we give random acts of kindness. That is good, it’s a day where we become conscience of the needs of others beyond ourselves.

kindness-1197351_1920-1

How to celebrate – Find one person, animal or even a plant that you can be kind to today. (You’ll be surprised how much better it makes you feel about yourself) Give comfort to someone who is hurting.  Use to be we could tell some stranger they looked good today but now we can’t for fear of getting arrested. So rethink the values you use to have and choose carefully.

September 21st International Peace Day

It seems like since man was introduced to the world we have been at war somewhere. Greed, pride, misunderstanding, hunger – you name it we find a reason to go to war. Today is a day to celebrate peace. Sadly we do not find peace in many places. Maybe man is not a peaceful animal. We look around and want what someone else has, and if we can’t win it through hard work or effort, we fight for it until we win it, or lose everything.

wordcloud-2-002-1024x768

We can blame the past, we can blame the future, we can blame what is going on right now, but the truth is, the failure lies with each and everyone of us. The least intelligent always blame someone else for their woes. We cannot atone for our forefathers mistakes, and should not be held accountable for them. We cannot change what happened to someone a hundred years ago, and should not be restrained because of them. We cannot win anything when we cost someone else something.

world-war-1-1-638

The Great War was supposed to be the war that ended all wars. It was horrid from any stand point of view and in the end, it proved nothing. No one really won, everyone lost more than the victory. Because it involved so many, it is viewed as one of the worst wars ever to have happened, but in realty it wasn’t any worse because of the killing, that comes with every war.

world-war-ii-special-512

And apparently we learned nothing from it because a few years later we did it all again. Today we are headed for a third world war because of religion, power, and greed. No one gained from either World War but we seem determined to go there again. What does terrorism hope to gain? What does having a nuclear bomb hope to gain? What does any racism have to gain? None of us is worth more than anyone else. None of us.

Map painted on hands.Concept of having the world in our hands

The United Nations was formed after World War 2. On September 21, 1981 it created International Peace Day. It went into effect in 1982 as the third Tuesday of September before being changed to September 21st, no matter what day it fell on, in 2002. I am not sure it has ever served the purpose it was meant to. There are still wars going on, still people who feel they are better than anyone else, or deserve something just because they exist. Resolution 36/67 is a great idea, but maybe not so practical until man learns a little more than they apparently know right now.

How to celebrate – Be thankful for what you have, more than what you could have. Stop blaming someone else for all your troubles. Try and figure out what you can do to help someone rather than hurt them.
