October 17th Sweetest Day

Okay, so like we needed another excuse to eat more candy and sweets. Well, add the third Saturday in October as another reason to celebrate something sweet to eat. The day was created by Herbert Birch Kingston in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922. This day originally was created to get sweets to those who could not afford them but as with most well intended ideas, it found a life of its own. So it’s sort of a mini Valentine’s Day today with the exception that it includes all kinds of sweets, not just candy.

How to celebrate – Give something sweet to someone you love. Provide something sweet to those who cannot afford them. Make someones life sweeter.

October 10th National Angel Food Cake Day

Though no one is claiming having created today it is generally accepted it appears in 2012. I am surprised no one thought up this day before that. Who hasn’t had Angel Food Cake before? It is wonderful with fruit or, in fact, just about anything. It has no fat since it is not make with butter, cream or egg yolks. It is always light and often paired with another “light” food, Jell-o! I am sure there are people who do not like Angel Food Cake but I have never met them. One might say that Angel Food Cake is… Heavenly.

How to celebrate – Make an Angel Food Cake today. Figure out the best combination for you to add to your Angel Food Cake. Make an Angel Food Cake and a Devil’s Food Cake and see which people eat first.

August 2nd National Ice Cream Sandwich Day

Now here’s a day practically everyone of us can get behind. Ice cream wedged between two wafers of some sort, normally chocolate cake like cookies. Of course it doesn’t have to be chocolate, it can be any flavor you want it to be, and the ice cream, while normally vanilla, can be any flavor you want it to be as well. In fact, with all the new flavors of ice cream, you can make it nearly a real sandwich, like broccoli ice cream sandwiched between two pieces of lettuce. Might be good but it’s still an ice cream sandwich. (Oddly, the ice cream sandwich predates things like the chocolate chip cookie and s’mores). The world has been enjoying ice cream sandwiches since the 1900’s.

How to celebrate – Have n ice cream sandwich. make your own ice cream sandwiches. Have an ice cream sandwich party with different flavors.

August 2nd National Ice Cream Sandwich Day

It’s summer, it’s time for ice cream… but when you are on the go, it’s not easy to carry the bowl around with you and what do you do with it after you are finished eating it? Well, the simple answer is to make a sandwich out of it and eat everything leaving to evidence behind! (Except for that extra pound or two you have gained.

Now the ice cream sandwich has been around since the early 1900’s. I am a little surprised it took so long after the Earl of Sandwich invented the… sandwich. It is a logical conclusion and really doesn’t take all that much thought. I was going to give you a recipe here but… come on, how hard is it to figure out how to make your own ice cream sandwich!?!

The nice thing about it, it can be made with nearly any sandwich type material. Cake, cookies, brownies, sugar wafers… well you get the idea. Just take your favorite ice cream and slap it between two more solid type objects. Do I need to add that those two objects need to be editable?

You can even add sprinkles or fruit, whipped cream or the maraschino cherry. (I suggest removing the stem first.) I have tried my own version of the ice cream sandwich, putting ice cream between lice cream. Trust me, it doesn’t work very well. (Though it tastes great)

They are easy to make, even easier to buy… well, normally. While I was writing this I decided I wanted an ice cream sandwich and I went to the store to buy some. They were sold out! So I guess it’s a pretty popular day. The lesson here is…buy often and buy early!

How to celebrate – Stock up on ice cream sandwiches! (You won’t regret it) Make your own ice cream sandwiches using your favorite ice cream and whatever sweet you choose to place on the outer edges. Do not, I repeat do not, put brocoli inisde your ice cram!

July 19th National Raspberry Cake Day

This day is all over the place. July 31st, August first, July 19th which is just fine by me… I love raspberries. Have you tried that new coffee creamer out, white chocolate raspberry? What goes better with cake than coffee? (Okay, maybe milk) Make that white chocolate raspberry coffee and it’s even better!

Normally the raspberry is mixed with some other flavor, like dark chocolate. I like dark chocolate, well, sort of, but it covers up the raspberry flavor. Please make something that doesn’t cover up the flavor of the raspberry! And a typical raspberry cake tastes like raspberries!

Now, I’ve never actually had a raspberry cake made for me. I understand but perhaps it’s because no one ever had a recipe so… here’s one for you! Of course, I could make it for myself, I am capable… but I also know that if I do, there won’t be any raspberries left to put in, or on, the cake.

I am even trying to grow raspberries in my backyard, not an easy task in Florida. The heat does not work well with raspberries. (Although one plant is over 6 foot tall!) There are a lot of cakes out there flavored with fruit… strawberry, blueberry, blackberry… but the raspberry isn’t all that common. I guess cause they are expensive but boy are they good!

So find, or make, a raspberry cake today, or July 31st, or August 1st, or when ever you want to. You won’t regret it, unless of course you are allergic to them.

December 15th National Lemon Cupcake Day

As we approach Christmas we may not have the time to make complicated deserts with all the shopping, wrapping and snow shoveling to do. The simple answer is making cupcakes (Or better yet, just buying them in the store). Though that said, there is nothing like smelling a fresh cupcake being baked.

Cupcakes are little more than butter, sugar, eggs and flour. As simple as they are, they really didn’t appear on earth until Amelia Simmons revealed them in her cook book, American Cookery in 1796. I would have thought cupcakes came about a lot earlier, and maybe they did but were just not mentioned.

Now you can use practically any flavoring you want… strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, avocado… but lemon is is probably one of the most favorite flavors ever created. It is light and yet filling (Cause of the cake!) and generally accepted by practically everyone. Here’s a recipe for you.

There’s not much else to say. Make yellow a part of your Christmas this year by including the lemon cupcake. (Or you can really fool people by using food coloring and dying your lemon cupcake whatever color you want!)

November 25th National Parfait Day

After such a big meal on Thursday you might want to find a lighter fair today. The problem is, you still want flavor… well, let’s see… how about a Parfait! It’s the perfect combination of ice cream, whipped cream, syrups and fruit.

No, it’s not particularly healthy but it’s no worse than that pumpkin pie you just had. If you stretch it just a bit, the fruit is healthy! The treat is layered fun of different flavors and tastes each time you take a bite. But basically, it’s just a sundae served in a fancy glass.

The choices are nearly endless. You can even use granola or cake as a layer if you so choose. Apparently the most popular flavor is white chocolate but there is no hard rule of what you can have (that’s always nice when you are having a dessert). And I guess you could serve it in a bowl instead of a glass but there is something to be said for seeing those layers making it a little more tempting.

How to celebrate – Make Parfaits for your family tonight. Make a parfait bar where people can create their own combinations. Relax in front of a nice fire and just enjoy your parfait in peace and quiet.

October 14th National Dessert Day

What’s better than a great dessert!?! Absolutely nothing! In most cases we save great desserts for company or some special occasion but why? Do we not deserve to treat ourselves! Our Families! Our egos!

It’s hard to keep desserts healthy. That’s not what they are meant for. They are meant to please our inner self who doesn’t care how fat we get or what we stuff our faces with. But for the sake of argument add a few blueberries, raspberries or bananas.

Of course, all desserts should be topped off with a cherry. It’s only fitting and a dab of whipped cream doesn’t hurt either (Unless of course you are doing a flaming dessert). Most of us have been known to save room from our suppers, probably by not finishing the healthy stuff on our plate. This is sound thinking. And others of us insist on dessert even if we aren’t hungry anymore.

Well, here’s to sugar, a true friend for all who love desserts. In fact, maybe would should just skip the meal and have dessert instead! The idea of today is to have a dessert with every meal, and maybe for a few snacks along the way. And make it all of your favorites so you can save some for tomorrow.

And let’s not forget our pets either. They enjoy something sweat after eating their gruel. In fact I once had a dog, God love him causes he’s gone, who I could set a piece of cake and a piece of steak done in front of and he would eat the cake and leave the steak. (Maybe that’s why he’s not with us anymore.)

August 25th National Banana Split Day

Continuing on with eating our way through the summer, the next day up is “Banana Split Day”. It all started back in 1904 when an apprentice pharmacist created the first banana split at Tassel’s pharmacy in Latrobe, Pa. He cut a banana in two halves and placed them in a long bowl, filling the center of the bowl in with vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate ice cream. He covered the strawberry ice cream with a pineapple topping, the vanilla with chocolate flavoring, and the chocolate with strawberry topping. All of that was covered in whipped cream, to which crushed nuts and maraschino cherries, wete added. It cost a dime.

Today we make a number of variations including those that add fresh fruit to the recipe and maybe use different flavors of ice cream. Of course back in 1904 there weren’t that many varieties of ice cream to choose from. In fact, you can use any flavor of ice cream you choose, any fruit that’s in season (which is practically all of them since it is summer), and you can use heavy, regular, or light whip cream. And nuts have become optional since so many are now allergic to them.

You don’t even have to use the bowl any more. You can put all the fixings in a ice cream cone and carry it with you where ever you go.

You can also make it into a cake, using the same ingredients, or those of your choice, and turn it into a party. You can still use ice cream if you like, or a flavored batter, that will taste like the Split, but is lactose free.

Or you can make the best of both worlds and turn your banana split into a pie and meet the ice cream half way!

Anyway you choose to have a banana split is totally acceptable, so long as you accept the calories that go along with it.

This year, 2016, the US Post Office came up with a stamp celebrating the banana split. It sells for 47 cents. More than the original Split, but less than any single item in the split would cost you by itself.

July 21st National Junk Food Day

Junk food is often referred to as “Comfort food” because we normally turn to it when we are unhappy or sad about something. It probably does make us happy for the moment, that sweet taste or salty goodness tastes so good… it’s what happens afterwards that makes us even sadder and unhappy.

Sure that ice cream smooths things over for a few minutes, that bottle of beer (which by the way is junk food as well) makes the troubles disappear, and that bunch of french fries makes us forget about anything else while we are eating them. But whatever drove us to those comforts will come back shortly and haunts us, reminding us daily as we look at our stomachs, our thighs, and those frightening man boobs!

The thing is, it’s not the junk foods fault! It’s ours! There’s nothing wrong with junk food, as long as we don’t get carried away. Diets don’t work because when we are on a diet, all we can think about is what we can’t have instead of what we can! Under normal circumstances given the choice between an apple or a candy bar we might actually choose the apple, but when we are denied the candy bar, that is what we crave.

Junk food does have a place in life today. It is convenient, it is fast, and it does taste good. Used when we don’t have time or other choices it serves a purpose. The problem is, in life today we find those conditions more the rule than the exception. A soda will cool you down, but it will also increase the sugar in your body which heats you back up! Diet sodas are known to mimic serious desease. Pizza really isn’t all that bad for you, as long as you don’t eat the whole thing by yourself. Hamburgers aren’t all that bad either, though red meat does have its drawbacks,  it’s more all the bread and condiments we add to it. And fries, well.. there isn’t really much good about them at all. There is nothing wrong with a potato but fry it in grease, add a lot of salt, and shove that in your mouth, it’s a different story.

Cereals are more often than not filled with sugar. Donuts, brownies, chips, and candy have little redeeming quality to them either. It’s not that eating them is so awful for you, its eating so many of them that causes the problems. But for today you can forget all of that as we celebrate junk food day. And tomorrow, we will pay the price for our celebration.

How to celebrate – visit a candy or chocolate factory. Maybe replace that candy bar with a piece of celery or that hamburger with a turkey sub (after today if course). Don’t worry about it and eat what you want which is probably what you are going to do anyway.
