April 11th National Pet Day

Today was created by Colleen Paige, Pet and Family Lifestyle Expert, in 2006. It should have been created long before that! Pets are more than just animals in our houses, yards, they are a part of our families, friends and lives. Whether your pet is a dog, cat, rabbit, snake, whatever, it depends on you but you also depend on it. My dog is one of my best friends. No, it’s not like my wife or kid, it’s can’t go have drinks with me at a club and though it tries really hard, it can’t catch the football I throw around in the back yard. But she is always there, trying to make me smile and ready to give me kisses for absolutely no reason at all.

How to celebrate – Love your pet. If you don’t have a pet rescue one from a shelter. Give your best friend a hug. not just today but every day.

April 8th Draw A Bird Day

April 8th Draw A Bird Day

DAB Day has been around since the 1940’s in the UK. Why, well… I guess because it could be since I found no other particular reason for it. Perhaps with the war in Europe raging it gave people something to do, or maybe it gave an air of freedom or maybe it broke the tension of the bombardment.  Or maybe it’s not as obvious as we think since a woman in the UK was often called a bird. Which makes us all wonder why, only slightly more than why we celebrate Draw A Bird Day at all.

How to celebrate – Draw a bird. Visit the UK. Join the Audubon Society.

June 23rd Pink Flamingo Day

June 23rd Pink Flamingo Day

The Pink Flamingo was invented by Don Featherstone back in 1957. Yes, pink flamingos do exist in the world because they eat shrimp and that dyes their feathers pink, but that’s not what today is all about. It’s about that pink plastic flamingo created at the Union Products plants and sold from Leominster, Mass. Now Union Products has gone out of business and the rights to make pink flamingos sold to several other companies since then, but the city of Leominster created today to celebrate it’s claim to fame, created by Donald Featherstone. What a legacy!

How to celebrate – Buy a pink flamingo for your yard. Dress like a pink flamingo (since today is also National Pink day you can kill two birds with one stone!) Find some use for that plastic pink flamingo. Hold a Pink Flamingo Flocking Fundraiser.

May 4th Bird Day

May 4th Bird Day

Today was created by Charles Babcock from Oil City, Pennsylvania in 1894. We cherish the birds around us today, although I do not recommend standing under them as you admire them. It is hard not to be cheered up by a singing bird…unless of course, they are singing at four in the morning. From the majestic eagle to the ugly vulture, every bird serves a purpose. They are beautiful to look at (well most of them anyway), and aid our environment while putting a smile on our faces.

How to celebrate – See how many types of birds you can name. Go outside and see how many different types of birds you can find. Put out bird feeders to attract birds to your yard.
