August 23rd National Ride The Wind Day

August 23rd National Ride The Wind Day

Gen_GCondor_lg

Today is not the type of day I thought it would be at all. It is all about human powered flight machines. Hang gliders and bicycle type flying machines allow you to literally, ride the wind. The Gossamer Condor 2 currently holds the record flying at 11 miles per hour and going 2,172 meters in Minter Field, California.

The article about the Condor 2 does not say how the landing was. So maybe man really can fly… albeit with a little help from Mother Nature and a few well-placed pedals.

How to celebrate – Learn how to hang glide. Build your own bicycle flying machine. Estimate how long it would take to fly from coast to coast in the U.S. using the Condor 2.

August 22nd Be An Angel Day

This day has a different kind of meaning to me. As you may have guessed, I am a writer… I do more  than blogs. (Whether they are good or not I leave to you) However, I wrote  a manuscript called, “Why The Evergreens Stay Green”. It involves and Angel that once lived on earth and is charged to come back and find a tree willing to have itself turned into a manger for Jesus, without knowing who Jesus actually is.

7691695e-ae07-4e9c-8b2b-bce1043f91c1_angels_and_a_stairway_to_heaven

I think it is a good story with some meaning to it… sacrifice is often asked of us without knowing who or what will benefit from it. I was asked to turn it into a play for children for Christmas time at a church. The Minister came back and told me they could not do it the way it was written because people cannot be Angels.

I thought the minister was missing the point, and wrong, so I looked it up and darn if he wasn’t right. According to theology, people cannot become, or ever have been, Angels. People are supposed to be above Angels because they have to learn and accept the Lord, instead being “born” as an Angel and more or less be “forced” into service. (Not the right words but I am not sure how else to state it.)

But in my world, I feel Angels are better, and something we should all strive to be. As humans, we are flawed. Angels are not. The idea that if you live your life trying to live up to the image of an Angel will make you a better person. If this makes God be mad at me, I am sorry. We should all strive to be better than we are and since we would only have each other to use as an example of how to live our lives, without Angels, I chose to try and live mine like an apprentice Angel, striving to actually become one some day. Today was created by Jayne Howard Feldman in 1993. God bless her.

How to celebrate – Try to be better today than yesterday. Put others before yourself. Trust in God to lead your way.

August 21st National Senior Citizen Day

I wonder what it’s like to get old? Oh wait, I’m already there! Oh well… it’s not that different than when I was younger. Sure I can’t do as much and I certainly do not do things as fast, maybe I forget a little bit here and there but I’m still kicking and still have value!

oldppl

That’s the thing about people as they get old, they don;t feel useful anymore. Nothing could be more wrong. If younger people would listen to the older people around them they might actually benefit from the wisdom, more often than not because they have already made the same mistake the younger person is about to commit. However, the old saying live and learn applies to nearly everyone.

images (6)

There really isn’t much we senior citizens can’t do better now than we did when we were younger… including those things we have leaned that we are not good at. Sometimes knowing what you don’t know is just as valuable as thinking you know everything!

25977591603_f2f06af299_b

Senior Citizens Day has actually been proclaimed by Congress too, so it’s official. Now, let’s try and guess together who created today. I won’t reveal it until the next paragraph so you can take a few seconds to think about it. Don’t scan ahead, try and guess. While you are thinking, what age do you consider somene a Senior? Most would say 65 but with the new medicines and life styles maybe it’s 70, or 75 or even 55. I think it’s all what’s in your mind.

images (5)

So, you are as old as you feel. Keep yourself young in body and thought and you may never actually be a Senior Citizen! Oh, and the answer is, Ronald Reagan… one of our oldest Presidents ever. It is Proclaimation 5847 and created August 19th, 1988 for August 21st.

How to celebrate – Never grow old. Realize your strengths, don’t exaggerate your weakness as you grow older. Enjoy life.

August 20th National Radio Day

Today we celebrate something nearly all of us grew up having, the radio. The radio came out of Ernest Mercadier’s and Alexander Graham Bell’s work with radio waves in 1881. It is a direct result of the invention of the telephone and telegraph.  Guglielmo Marconi is credited with it’s actual creation.

Family-listening-to-radio-300x203

There was a time when the radio was to our ancestors what the television is to us today. Most people got their news, sports and entertainment from the radio. In fact, Orson Welles, “War of the Worlds” first was a radio program that so many believed it actually turned into a near national disaster!

images (3)

Today the raio appears everywhere we go. It’s in our cars, on our headphones, in most stores and even in elevators. Even most television shows are broadcast on radio, not that they work all that well, but you’ll find them there.

il_570xN.390379620_cgro

As with every invention, the popularity of them begin to dwindle as everyone obtains them and it seems like as soon as we invent something, it’s already out of date by the time we purchase it. And if you have ever been a hurricane, you learn the true value of something like a radio.

mipan

So the next time you get in your car and turn on your radio, thinking nothing of it, imagine what life would be like without the radio. Sure, in some ways maybe we have moved on past it but we will never replace it.

How to celebrate – Enjoy your radio. See if you can remember any of the old radio stars. Imagine where the music industry would be without the radio.

August 19th National Aviation Day

August 19th National Aviation Day

Today we celebrate all those aviators that have led to our advancement in air travel and even into space. The day was created by President F. D. Roosevelt in 1939 to honor Orville Wright who was born August 19th, 1871. (Bet that didn’t make Wilbur very happy).

If you think about the world of flight it really is amazing that we have come so far in such a short time considering the belief that man was never meant to fly.

How to celebrate – Read more about the Wright Brothers. See how many famous aviators you can name. Take some flying lessons. (You never know when it may come in handy)

August 18th Bad Poetry Day

Now here’s something we can all do. Write bad poetry. Some even say I excel at it, and I’ll bet you can too! There aren’t many days where we are able to celebrate something we are bad at. And it really doesn’t matter how long these poems are, generally the shorter they are, the better.

images

One might even say that a cat, or your animal of choice, could write these. (Just hopefully not in the litter box). It is one of those talents that requires no thought at all, or at least the less is better.

bad-poetry-day1-1920x580

The real challenge is reading it or listening to it.  Our minds what rhyme and meter. We crave it, so something like… There once was a man from Boston, (The natural next line would have something like awesome included in it) who lived in a house, he wasn’t very rich, which means he was poor. I suppose you could call this a poem, just a bad one, not a good one.

Bad Poetry Day

Or even worse are those containing words that don’t actually exist like… Mostious or likeist. But today you can use any word you want and any non-rhyme pattern you like. It is bad poetry day… the one day a year where doing our worst is actually our best.

How to celebrate – Write a bad poem. Read a book of known bad poetry. Become a poetry critic.

August 17th National Thrift Shop Day

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Well, maybe but where in the world do you find these treasures?!? You can wait for the weekend and go to garage sales or you can go to the Thrift Shop where they collect everything that didn’t sell at a garage sale.

national-thrift-store-day-2-889x675

The trick here is knowing what is treasure and what is trash. Now you can study all the antique books you can find but that still won’t make you an expert. Trust me, just because it looks old doesn’t always make it old. I’ve never been lucky enough to find  a fortune buying something that someone else discarded.

ba7b6a43-30b8-4f94-b2d2-1ac5cd46990e

And isn’t that what most people find at thrift shops? Things that no longer fit, are outdated or mystery items no one knows what they are used for. And then, whatever it is has to get past the shop owner and the workers if there is any value to it. Not that it doesn’t happen, it does… but they are few and far between.

enhanced-buzz-21916-1282055204-3

And there is no law requiring things like shoes to match. If you really want to wear two different shoes at the same time, why not? But as for setting a new trend, don’t count on it. Since you are wearing a mis-match pair of shoes there is probably someone else who bought the other pair!

images (2)

But its a lot like Christmas. You never know what you’re going to get but it is fun to anticipate what you might find. Keep on looking, it normally benefits someone in need.

How to celebrate – Go thrift shop shopping. Donate to thrift shops those things you no longer need. Study before you shop so you know what you are after.

August 16th National Rum Day

August 16th National Rum Day

The pirates drink of choice… maybe because it was so easy to get. Rum comes from molasses or sugar cane and blends well with many different types of mixers. It comes in many flavors these days for those who seek variety.

pirate_rum

The most sought-after rum seems to come from the Caribbean Islands, perhaps why it was the pirates drink of choice. It also may have led indirectly to the American Revolution when the Crown placed a tax on sugar, in 1764, that helped start the disenchantment between England and America.

How to celebrate – Have some rum tonight! (If you are old enough) Explore the different types and flavors of rum. Invent your own special rum drink.

August 15th Relaxation Day

Boy there sure seem to be a lot of this type of day during the summer. Maybe it’s because it’s so hot and you really do need to have down time after performing some activity during the day.

relaxation-day-fun

Plus, it’s a time when you can go outside and enjoy the weather rather than fight it. Just kick back and listen to the birds sing, watch the clouds fly by and maybe nap. There are a lot of ways to relax, each of us have our favorite. They art not all doing nothing. Some people relax by playing baseball, going bike riding or even working in the garden.

marriott-relaxation-day-with-13154517

Swimming is always a favorite. It’s good exercise, cool and relaxing. Some relax by swimming laps while others, floating down a lazy river. It’s more about putting yur mind at ease, allowing it to slow down and rejuvenate itself.

images (6)

Others find yoga a way to relax, or taking yourself into a zen state. Again, this is all about the mind more than the body.  They say that those who work hard, play hard… and I suppose that’s true. It’s still relaxing, even if it doesn’t look like it.

images (5)

Still, just laying back and soaking in the sun while closing your eyes and letting your mind wander is what brings the most satisfactory results for most people… and animals. take a deep breath, breath in the fresh air and exhale the day.

How to celebrate – Relax in what ever way you choose. Make time for daily relaxation. It’s summer, relax.
