May 1st National Pet Month

May 1 National Pet Month

This month, for the entire month, we recognize that one man’s pet may not be another’s. However, it shouldn’t matter. If you love your pet, why care about whether someone else loves it or not? Dogs and cats are the best known pets but frankly they can come from any species on earth (and maybe from elsewhere if you believe in that sort of thing). Horses, snakes, rodents and I assume even the occasional worm could be considered pets. Love them regardless of what they are, they are yours and you should be theirs. And remember, this is not just for today but for the entire month!

How to celebrate – Take your pet for a walk (not recommended for goldfish). Spend more time each day with your pet. Buy your pet a gift.

April 23rd Lover's Day

Today is the day set aside for lover’s. Now most of us think lover’s are people who are drawn to each other but there is more to being a lover than just how you feel about another person. It applies to anything that you love, animals, plants, books, tennis, baseball, music, movies… it can go on and on. The general idea is that anything to love, love to see or love to do is celebrated today. And I suppose it is possible to love many things all at the same time. This does not include things you like a lot, you have to love them!

How to celebrate – List everything you love. Spend a little time with everything you love today. If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one your with!

April 10th National Farm Animals Day

April 10th – National Farm Animals Day

How often do farm animals get celebrated? Not very often! Colleen Paige, Animal Rescuer, Vegetarian and Pet Lifestyle Expert created today in the hope that we might look at those animals on farms as living creatures rather than supper. Having grown up on a farm I do have a tendency to look at animals differently. I’m not a vegetarian but I could not look an animal in the eye and then slaughter it. I have had goats, horses and cattle as pets. All were a little tough to take for walk but they all served a purpose. They are living, breathing and caring animals if you give them a chance. And just like people they feel, love and think (Though maybe with some limitations.)

How to celebrate – Visit a petting zoo. Spend some time on a farm. Love your pet.

April 8th Zoo Lover's Day

I know most zoos are controversial. I get it, caging up animals meant to roam free is unnatural. The trouble is, in the world today, zoos are often safer for animals than being in the wild. There are numerous breeds that would have been lost to history if not for zoos. It is also a chance for us to see animals that we may not otherwise be able to see. Many zoos also have wonderful rehabilitation programd. So instead of being upset with these places that are trying to keep their animals healthy and happy, try just going to a zoo and enjoying yourself. Originally called a Menagerie, zoos have been around since 1500 BC.

How to celebrate – Visit a zoo. Do not condemn what you do not understand. Help fund zoos to do the right thing and help with rehabilitation programs.

January 21st National Hugging Day

Who doesn’t want a hug? Okay, maybe not if you just came inside from a mud battle with the kids but how often does that happen? Hugs aren’t just a human thing either. Dogs, cats, elephants, practically every creature in the world hugs. It reassures someone, provides comfort and equalizes us. After all, whether you are wealthy or homeless, the idea of a hug means the same thing. For years men were shunned for hugging, that’s changed. Now a hug shows that you mean something more to someone than just a handshake or nod. Today was created by Rev. Kevin Zaborney in 1986 and we thank him. For today we can hug without being thought of asout of place or out of step.

How to celebrate – Hug someone. Hug your pets. Receive a hug without judgement.

December 2nd National Mutt Day

Dec. 2nd National Mutt Day

How about making this Christmas brighter for everyone! Get a dog, from a shelter, that could really use your love and probably give you back more than you can even contemplate receiving. It is estimated that thee are 3.3 million dogs in shelters in the United States. Most are animals that are filled with love and truly are man’s best friend. They, like most humans, do not deserve to live their lives in cages, seldom, if ever, getting much human contact. All they want is a home, and a little hope. They give back much more than they take and I can tell you, they are truly your best friend. They do not care about what you look like, how you smell or what you like to do… they just want to be with you and share your experiences, which really are all that much better for them being there. Today was created by Colleen Page in 2005, bless her.

How to celebrate – Free a dog today. Get a best new friend today. Give hope to those who have been forgotten.

October 23rd National Mole Day

Yesterday was a day of choices, today there are even more choices. What is a mole? Is it that creature that crawls under the ground, that bump that grows on your skin or a spy deep inside your society? What about the chemical formula Avogadro came up with? The atomic mass of the molecule? Bet you wouldn’t have picked that one! 6.02 times 10^23. Well we celebrate today to honor his discovery. I am still trying to figure out why but that’s not important. What is important is that it is another day to party! Like you really needed a reason to anyway! If we honor the accomplishments of others, even if we do not understand them, then we honor life itself. Today might be Avogadro’s day. maybe tomorrow will be yours!

How to celebrate – Study chemistry. Look for moles in your yard. Find out how many molecules you are made out of.

March 30th National Take A Walk In A Park Day

You could take a walk anywhere today but why not make it a park!?! national park, state park, county park… it really doesn’t matter. The weather is hopefully nicer now where you live, the full color of nature is beginning to return and animals are once again out and about. It is the perfect time to get out among it and become a part of nature. It’s peaceful, calming and can bring us to an understanding of what is really important in life and what’s not. (This will vary with each and every person you talk to) Look at a tree and remember that no tow leaves are perfectly alike. There are thousands, maybe even millions of leaves in a park… do the represent the people on the earth? Think about it while you go for a walk in a park.

How to celebrate – Find a park close to you. Go for a walk. Take friends with you so you can share what you see, hear and feel.

February 17th Random Acts of Kindness Day

What goes around, comes around. Today is a day that we should celebrate every day of our lives. It is simple enough to do. Just be kind, whether to people or animals isn’t as important and why not both! It will come back to you, sometime, some place.

It can be as simple as waving hello to someone, taking a homeless person a sandwich or taking your dog for a walk somewhere you don’t normally go. You never know what might happen or how it might affect someone. it might bring them out of depression, change a bad mood into a good one or just make them feel special if only for a moment. Sometimes that moment is a that is required.

Well today is set aside as that day you go out of your way to make someone else’s day a little better. You can go back to ignoring it tomorrow, but then… why?

How to celebrate – Give a random act of kindness to a stranger today. Do the same for someone you know. Wait for that special feeling you get when you have done something nice for someone else.

January 31st Inspire You Heart with Art Day

Yes, it’s time to inspire yourself with something beautiful. For some, that’s a painting, a sculpture or maybe photograph. There is no question that there are beautiful things out there to celebrate. It might even be a poem or a person or even an animal. You should spend the day taking them in and securing them in your memory.

Maybe you could even buy something beautiful… not a person. That way you will always have it around you to remember today as you inspire yourself with what the world can provide. If you have the talent, you can even create it yourself to keep forever, or share with someone else.

Just remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It doesn’t always mean that what you see as beautiful has to be beautiful to someone else. And be sure to look past the surface, particularly with people because sometimes the most beautiful parts are being held in reserve.

And look for the beauty within yourself. Those things that separate you from everyone else and make you beautiful. after-all, you are a work of art too. God’s art.

How to celebrate – Visit a museum. Go to an art gallery. Take pictures of what you see so you can easily remember them.
