October 25th Punk For A Day

I’m not sure that I completely understand the punk movement. While I was growing up the thought of being a punk was one of the worse things one could become. I understand rebellion, I don’t understand looking like death warmed over.

Of course, my parents didn’t understand me wanting to play rock and roll so I guess it’s a generational thing. Oddly though, much of the punk look is going back to the way Native American warrior looked when they went to war.

It seems that mutilating parts of your body goes along with being a punker. While I guess that’s fine for youth I wonder how they will feel when they reach seventy. And I come from an era where having something hanging from you nose was considered gross.

But its youth and so they rarely think about the future. (Or at least their future) They are too busy protesting the present. And for many they don’t even have a cause that concerns them, they just like looking that way.  I guess there are those who found Frankenstein attractive as well.

One area I do kind of find interesting is the Steam Punk movement.  It sort of mixes the old days with modern times. Though the picture above is supposed to represent a Steam Punk Christmas which I don’t really see.

How to celebrate – Dress up like a punk for the day. (Just remember not to make it permanent!) Create your own punk era. Join a punk rock band and go rock out!

October 24th National Bologna Day

When I was a child I use to love Bologna sandwiches. Add a little cheese and mayo or mustard, or both, and my day was made! It didn’t matter if it was German bologna, Beef bologna or Kosher bologna, I just knew it was good!

And occasionally my mom would fry the bologna and I was in Heaven. I am not sure what made it even better when it was fried but it was. Every once in a while we got it for breakfast as a special treat.

And then, as I got older, I started to question what was in bologna.  It is made from sausage or mortadella, a cubed sausage. Black pepper, nutmeg, allspice, celery seed, coriander and myrtle berry is added for flavoring. It does come from Bologna, Italy originally.

I tend not to eat too many things that are ground up and mixed together before I get the chance to know what all is really in there. Like hotdogs which are perfectly safe but may contain parts I am not openly willing to eat. You are pretty safe if it is Kosher though so maybe I should give it a chance again. It really was good!

How to celebrate – Have a bologna sandwich for lunch today. Make up your own bologna recipe. (Use is sort of like Spam) Treat your kids to bologna, even if they don’t eat much of anything they will probably like bologna… just don’t tell them what’s in it.

October 23rd National Mole Day

Wow, when I heard today was Mole Day I instantly thought of that funny look creature that digs up our yards, little did I know it was something scientific! But I was wrong and while I am still not sure exactly what the day is, I will celebrate along with every chemist in the world.

The day began when an article appeared in The Science Teacher in the 1980’s. The article was championed by Maurice Oehler, a chemistry teacher in Wisconsin when he formed the National Mole Day Foundation on May 15th. 1991. Still confused, me too.

Apparently it has something to do with defining the particles, or atoms or molecules in a mole. It is one of seven base SI units. The others being metre, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin and candela. I guess that’s what separates chemists from the rest of us.

Well, I’m not sure how to celebrate it because even after reading and re-reading the definition I still don’t know what it is! I am glad chemists do though since I think it is real important! I should have paid more attention to my high school chemistry class.

How to celebrate – I am going to take a nap. Go back to school and relearn chemistry. Move on to tomorrow!

October 22nd National Nut Day

There are all sorts of nuts in the world. Crazy people, the type that goes on bolts and those we can’t mention. But today we are going to talk about the editable type. And Peanuts are not nuts, they are legumes!

However, things like pumpkin seeds and squash seeds are actually considered nuts. In part because all nuts are seeds. I can honestly say there isn’t a nut I do not like, and what’s even better, they are good for you! Now there are some nuts you should not eat, like Candlenuts that are crushed and their oil used but it got me wondering how many nuts I could name.

nuts in shell

I got, almonds, walnuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pecan, pistachio, Brazil, pine, acorn and Macadamia… my all time favorite. And nuts are very versatile as well. They can be used in salads, in syrups, in all sorts of desserts, as meat tenderizers, drinks, coffee creamers.. well yu name it, and it probably contains nuts!

Of course, a lot of people are allergic to nuts, but primarily the peanut which again, is not a nut! The nut has been with us since the beginning of time and it will probably be there long after man has disappeared from the face of the earth.

One acorn

Nuts are definately good for your heart. They contain unsaturated fats, Omega 3 fatty acids and lots of Vitamin E. You should make njuts a part of every meal and snack, you’ll feel better and look better.

How to celebrate – Gather up some nuts for winter! Bake a pecan pie! Make some trail mix with lots of nuts in it.

October 21st National Babbling Day

If you have ever finished a conversation and just wondered what you were told? Well that’s probably because one or the other of you, or possibly both, were just babbling. Or you may have been having a conversation with yourself because that is considered babbling as well.

And if you have ever had the luck of getting a two year old on the phone then you are probably very familiar with babbling. I am sure they knew what they were talking about but no one else did.

To babble probably comes from the city of Babylon where the citizens tried to build a tower that would reach Heaven. Spoiler alert, they didn’t make it. Apparently, everybody understood what language each other spoke before the tower Afterwards, they could not understand each other as they began to babble. So they were the babbling Babylons!

Of course most politicians babble because they don’t want you to know what they really said. The odd thing about it that they seem to be able to understand each other, at least enough to disagree with them.

Well, if you feel like babbling today is your day! Enjoy it, it only comes once a year as opposed to the constant babbling done at random!

How to celebrate – Start babbling to some one and see how long they listen before walking away. Take a trip to Babylon and see if you can get anyone to understand you. Become a olitician so you can openly babble all the time.
